I find it hard to believe that on a day as busy as today, we wasted the time to fill out the paperwork to acquire a third-round RD prospect. Are we worried that Clarke, Faber, Spence and Grans aren't going to turn out?

This was a trade for the Reign. The Kings injuries have gutted the Reign's defensive pipeline. The Reign started this season with Durzi, Spence, and Strand on the right, and those are the three guys playing in the NHL right now. Grans is the only RHD left right now, so Allard was added to help out down there.
It's unlikely that either guy would have ever played a game for the Kings.
Faber's Univ of Minnesota made the NCAA tournament and play games this week. They play defending national champions UMass on the 25th. Unless there is a huge upset, Faber's season will end there, and he will likely then sign his ELC with the Kings. He'll likely sign a PTO with the Reign and join their team for the playoffs as well.
