I don’t see the Sabres having interest in either of those prospects- LD is our deepest position in the organization

And I’m fairly certain Olofsson STARTS with a 1st
They don’t wanna “sell low” on him
So it’s likely we give him a bridge deal & possibly trade him in the future when he’s healthy & his stats go back up

Would an Olofsson for Blueger + 3rd/4th work for both sides?

I've seen you make this same comment multiple times.

How has Olofsson's play this season shown that he's worth a 1st round pick, let alone a 1st plus anything else?

Further, he has one year season left before becoming a UFA, so what bridge deal are you talking about? He could choose ARB and take a one year deal and be gone after next season.

When are they trading him then, at next season's trade deadline, or are you advocating for the Sabres sign him to a multi-year deal after this season?

His play THIS SEASON doesn’t merit a return of a 1st round pick
But that’s doesn’t mean we’re gonna “sell low” on him
He’s been playing through an injury that’s caused his production to drop

Why would he go to ARB when he’s having such a down season statistically?
So yes, I’d advocate we meet in the middle on a 2 or 3 year deal
But even if he does go to ARB….
It makes a heck of a lot more sense to wait & trade him at next year’s deadline, when his stats will surely have gone up

And if he signs a multi-year deal,
then we have more time to decide to trade him or keep him & sign him long term

No reason to just dump him now for whatever we can get though
That just doesn’t make sense

Sabres have talked about potentially moving him bc of the return he could bring
If his lack of production has caused his value to drop,
then i highly doubt we move him right now

That’s just based on what I’m hearing
To my knowledge, they haven’t made up their minds on him yet

Simple answer: He goes to ARB to get a guaranteed one year deal at a minimum of $3.25M and he gets to be a UFA after next season, having full control of where he goes.

The Sabres have talked about moving him because he's an empty uniform too often on the ice and he's not the style of player they're looking for on the team moving forward.

Not true really
What you’re saying makes him tradable, but that doesn’t mean we are gonna “sell low” on a proven top6 scorer
I know for a fact that they want a 1st for him
Like we’ve BOTH said, his production this season makes that unlikely
So from what I’ve heard, I’m putting 2+2 together & making the leap that we won’t dump him this season

We can always just do it at the deadline next year & most likely get more for him
And if he craps out next season as well (which i doubt), then what we’d lose out on from trading him now likely won’t be all that much

They wanted a 1st for Colin Miller as well, but that doesn't mean it is going to happen.

It's entirely plausible that being stapled to Eichel's hip the past 2 seasons has inflated Olofsson's production and without Eichel, Olofsson is just another decent middle six winger.

Well sure, that’s “plausible”
Except he hardly played with Eichel last year bc Jack got hurt & played like 20games

But I’ll play along….
the only downside to trading Olofsson this year is if we’re worried his value will decrease
Hard for me to imagine that could happen, but….

What do u think we could get for him now?
A 3rd? A mid-tier prospect?
We both agree his value has dropped this season, right?
So if we aren’t gonna get good value for him now….
Doesn’t it make sense to hang onto him till next year’s deadline to see if that value will go up?
Missing out on the 3rd or the mediocre prospect we can get now is NOT gonna bother me

If we can still get something good for him now, then great
I just doubt that we can

The downside you're not factoring in is his taking up a roster spot that could be used for a better player that more fits the team they're trying to build for next season and beyond.

Forward spots are already going to be at a premium for next season, and they need to upgrade, unless they don't care about winning again next season.

Who are u putting in Olofsson’s place that’s gonna make that much of a difference?
Not like we can get McJesus, lol

Who’s the best UFA forward out there?
Malkin? Kadri? Hertl?
Let’s say we somehow convince one of them to come….
Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Krebs-Kadri-Olofsson
Mitts-Cozens-Quinn
Asplund-Girgs-Okposo
Bjork
-Peterka starts in AHL, gets called up for injuries & is here permanently once Olofsson is traded

Swapping out Peterka for Olofsson hardly puts us in a better position to compete

And getting one of those UFAs is highly improbable anyways
But just for the hell of it….
Let’s say the pretty much impossible happens & we get TWO really good forwards from UFA somehow

Skinner-Tage-Tuch
Krebs-Kadri-Hertl
Mitts-Cozens-Olofsson
*Quinn starts in AHL

Are u really gonna try & say that Quinn in the lineup for 60games instead of Olofsson makes us a contender?
Doubtful imo

So let’s stipulate that to REALLY make a BIG difference,
we’d have to get ALL THREE of those guys
I don’t even think we could get 1,
let alone all 3
But keep dreaming i suppose

For the hell of it….
Let’s say we add in Malkin (or whoever) as well
Is that a Cup Contender?
Idk…. MAYBE?
But this is real life, not a video game

And if by some crazy miracle we could bring in THREE big time forwards to necessitate moving on from Olofsson….
We can just dump him for nothing to a team willing to take him on & sell him at next year’s deadline themselves

Sorry dude
But we aren’t gonna “win” next year like it seems u want to

Three big forwards Fitz?

Skinner, Tage, Tuch
Mittelstadt, Cozens, Olofsson
Peterka, Krebs, Quinn
Asplund, Girgensons, Okposo
Bjork

Where are you getting 3 from when that is the forward roster for next season?

I'd be looking to trade Olofsson and uprade via trade or UFA to bring in an RW that can produce points but still positively impacts the game if not producing points with defensive ability, toughness, and physicality. Someone like Copp or Nichushkin.

Let's not lose what could be for what should be.
Maybe after the first 16 games when he had 15 pts and 5 goals, Olofsson would have garnered much more than this, but in his last 22 he has 6 pts and 4 goals (two were empty netters).
I completely agree, Pierre-Olivier Joseph nor Zach Aston-Reese, fit into Buffalo's future, (their names are WAY TOO long), but Joseph has a decent ceiling and the second is a nice pick.
If Olofsson was traded, this would be a good return.

A good return for VO would be a late 1st or 2 2nds or a pick and near ready prospect in an area of need. Nothing in the proposed trade fits that description. Sorry. People seem to be discounting that VO was recovering from an injury that affected his shooting over his last 20 games. That now seems to be in the rearview mirror. Anthony Mantha, a pretty good comparable to VO, brought a 1st, a 2nd and 2 players including the Vrana (an RFA) who blossomed in Det after the trade and we re-signed to a 3-year extension.

I'm not saying VO will bring in that kind of return, but it will be better than this offer.

Bc just bringing in Copp instead of Olofsson isn’t enough of an improvement to make a difference
We’d have to bring in 2 or 3 studs for it to actually matter in the standings

Do u really think we are ONE forward away up front from being a playoff team?
Because i don’t
And i think that’s nuts

And what’s Fitzgerald got to do with it?
He’s a 6th/7th defenseman at best & has nothing to do with what we’re talking about

Improving 1 position is fine, it’s just not enough to make much of a difference. The difference in what we could get for Olofsson now vs next year could be pretty big though

And if your idea that Copp is an improvement over Olofsson that’s fine. But Olofsson being on the roster doesn’t prevent us from obtaining Copp or anyone else.
Sign Copp. Then simply start Peterka in the AHL, & play Olofsson in a spot to boost his stats.
Sabres aren’t any worse off.
Peterka will still see call up time with injuries, & the potential to earn a permanent roster spot when Olofsson is traded at the deadline next year.

I don’t really go on hockeybuzz. Way too much complaining going on there whenever I’m there.
Are you “KingKong” on there as well? I’ll keep an eye out next time I’m on. I’m “LetsGoBuffalo”
