Wouldn’t a roster player that fixes one of their issues - say defence - make more sense than draft picks?

This exactly. Regardless of what anyone thinks of Nylander, it is absolutely not debatable that this trade sucks for the leafs, especially considering they would have the cap in this scenario to keep him. I'm not against trading Nylander if they can drastically improve the defense in the process but this is not doing that.

well that depends how they lose doesnt it? Do you really think they should do something drastic if they lose a hard fought series to Tampa or Florida? This black and white lose or win stuff is incredibly short sighted. I mean, if they pull another montreal or columbus series that's one thing but they are probably playing a top 3 team in the league a team that they shouldnt beat on paper, that isnt a 'bad' loss that demands you do something dumb like trade a good player for a paltry return

Idk its at the point where it is black or white if you cant get it done with this team in the playoffs IMO after what would be 6 straight years of first round exits

Trade him for a top 4 Dman would be my do or a package involving a few really good depth players.

except that you need to evaluate the team based on what happens now. 6 straight 1st round exits with vastly different teams in different scenarios does not mean you need to do something just to do something.
If you have a 105 point team and you lose to a 115 point team they were a better team going in and you knew that, how does doing something dumb make you better next year?

you dont trade nylander for anything short of a top pairing defender at this point. You never trade guys like him for depth players, that would be supremely dumb, no team has ever done that and gotten better

Who said it would be a dumb trade? Depends what they get in return. Could be a change they need

What is dumb is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result.

except they havent done the same thing over and over again, since the first time they lost in the first round the team has changed drastically, the entire defence was rebuilt, the forwards are like 70% different the goalies too. then there was a weird mutant covid season and last year two of their most important players were injured from the hop and their best defender got hurt in game 3.
so again i ask, what does changing something for the sake of changing it fix?

ah yes the core, so 4 guys, maybe 5 if you count Rielly. and last year two of them were hurt so out of the 3 playoff rounds that all of them were present the leafs have lost in the 1st round 2 times. Once against a better team and once in that weird mutant covid season play in thing.
So they should totally trade one of those guys for something because that will help in ways that are totally a thing because it would be different and different is automatically better or somethign

mmm no you do. If they dont win changes will need to come

Bunting-Matthews-Marner has been great

Tavares cant be moved so its Nylander whose probs the guy out.

And if you can get some really good depth pieces for him and some picks sure

If you went to NJ and could get Severson + Bratt for him do it.

or they could trade other stuff to make the team better, like futures for Severson or whatever then you have a better defence and the better forward. Tampa and Chicago and the Pens all got better to win and stayed good by keeping their best players and surrounding them with the best supporting cast, not trading those guys for lesser players to be that supporting cast

Simple answer is I'd get trolled no matter which D man I picked, so this is easier.

You want to add another Top 4 dman, but you don't want to move any of the $45 million Top 6 forwards or your $20 million current Top 4 Dman or your soon to be $5 million goalie.

$70 million is already tied up on 11 players.

This will be the reason why this core group never wins any Championships, the team needs to find better depth players.

i dont want to move them to down grade the team. Bringing in a guy like severson and some middle 6 guy doesnt make the team better than you can simply by keeping nylander or whoever and using futures or whatever to improve the areas that need improving.
this is literally how tampa, pittsburgh, chicago and other teams who stay good and compete for long term do it, it is proven time and time again that trading good players for more worse players is not a way to get better or stay competative.

Pitts won back to back Cups because of a great coaching change.

Something the Leafs might have to think about.

Yes adding Phat Phil, who just like Larry Murphy, gets booed out for Toronto for being lazy and overpaid, yet both players won back to back Cups with their new team.

Works for team who have a GM who knows what they're doing,

Than you got Dubas and Co.

The Leafs filled the holes they needed by riding themselves of a star player, Kapanen scored at half scoring pace as Kessel but at 1/3 the price. And those picks from the Kessel trade went to Ana for Freddie Anderson, the biggest issue the Leafs had for a decade.

In other words trading a star player helped build the success the Leafs have.

And the Pens did well too.
