Bypassing the carnivores, this can work if you include Will Cuylle. The estrangement of Schiefele, places emphasis on two things:
Giving Winnipeg room for Perfetti and Dubois to take the top two center spots, and offering cap space for their upcoming contract extensions. Resigning Gauthier and Kravtsov will not tax the Jets, while Chytil on a one-year contract is as good as trade bait, with a $2.3 million dollar cap hit. Adding Cuylle, who will likely break through into the lineup next season, justifies the trade, and upholds the full potential of all the youth provided in this deal for Winnipeg.
As for the Rangers, the gamble on Copp short-term, is the reasoning for the Schiefele acquisition; it also renders the end of Ryan Strome as a Ranger. The cap space will be for placeholding: with each of LaFreniére, Miller and Kakko extensions on the horizon, and upcoming additions like Othmann (untouchable, Vultures!), Ryder Korczak and Dylan Garand coming along, the core of Zibanejad, Kreider, Fox, Panarin, Trouba and Shesterkin have a window along with Schiefele of two years to win.
