Gauthier is a former first round pick in 2016. Big, fast forward. Excellent on the cycle and at generating chances but has had trouble finishing.

Gorton loves him and spent years trying to trade for him when he was the Rangers GM. Gauthier is from the Montreal area. He's more of a project but has the potential to be a solid middle 6 winger in this league

His biggest selling point is that he's French. He's basically the 2016 version of Poehling. Late 1st round pick C that has bottomed out.

Looking at his possession metrics, they’re very underwhelming for a guy who’s supposedly good at generating chances and playing the cycle. Doesn’t look like he’s much of a defensive guy either. Gorton also didn’t sell the farm to get him; he gave up a guy that still can’t crack the nhl. Gauthier’s also 24, turning 25 this year. He was drafted nearly six years ago, so if he’s still considered a project then I’d say there’s probably still some glaring issue aside from just finishing. Lehkonen’s a very valuable player; he can play anywhere in the lineup and play both special teams. He’s defensively responsible as well. I’m not willing to give him up in a trade where the main piece coming back is only a couple years younger than him and still considered a project, who’s potential still maxes out around where lehkonen’s is now. Not only that, but Gauthier plays RW, a position where we have Caufield Anderson and Gallagher for the foreseeable future, so Montreal’s not even the best fit for him to maximize his potential, as he’d probably still be getting the same or less ice time than what little he’s getting with the rangers. Finally, we’re not in a position where we’re forced to trade Lehkonen. He’s 26 and can still fit the long term plans of this team, and is an rfa at the end of the season. No thanks.
