The Blues certainly do not need a G, and they could certainly get better for less anyway.

WSH doesn't have the cap space. Would be a fan of it otherwise

@NeedTheCleanser
Those returns would be off the chart, but still very possible.
Take on more cap from WAS, EDM and the third team for one year and it is very plausible that Buffalo could walk away with and extra 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Throw in Eakin (many teams would want to acquire his 56% FO and PK skills), Pysyk and Hinostroza (nearly 1/2 pt/game) and there could be more draft capital returning to Buffalo.
Great post I like it a lot.

If you like the exchange, there must be a way to make it work under the cap.

Perhaps sending Schultz back would work? Long term there really isn’t a great way to do it unless they lose Oshie or Mantha’s contracts.

You know your team better than I but including Schultz in the deal would seem to be counter productive to the Capitals, as they would need another RHD.
While Buffalo does not need Hagelin, he would seem to be the better choice for cap relief and Olofsson could take his spot in the line up?
But then Washington would need some one to PK.
I hope Mantha can return for the playoffs, what is his status?

For RD, the Caps could bounce TVR back to the right side and bring up Alexeyev or Johansen full time as the 3 LD, so that shouldn’t be a big problem.

Hagelin could be interesting, Washington could either bring Protas back up to move someone like Sheary to the 4th line if needed, and The PK spot could be filled by Hathaway so it wouldn’t be bad to lose him. Would be a short term solution but I wouldn’t be opposed.

As for Mantha, he’s currently skating in a non-contact jersey. There have been various reports of when he returns, with some saying as soon as the first week in March, but I expect likely he’ll be back some time in late March or April. Would make the cap an interesting situation but perhaps Buffalo could send somebody similar to Hagg who’s slightly cheaper if possible to make the cap work. Kempny hasn’t been starting in DC so getting a D back for him isn’t a huge need.

Maybe take Hagg out and replace with Bryson and make the 5th a conditional 3rd that can turn into a 2nd. My math tells me that that would make the cap work.

Why would Edmonton be interested in Miller? And why would they want to trade Koskinen if not to upgrade him?

I think that would work. Could also go without Hagg, so that one of Alexeyev or Johansen get playing time next year.

Every report says EDM wants RHD. Craig Anderson is better than Mikko Koskinen by every metric.

You didn't answer my question. Why would Edmonton want Miller?

And what does Anderson have to do anything? You traded him to St. Louis, not Edmonton.

Colin Miller is on pace for 10 GAR per Evolving Wild. He’s had a really nice season before his injury (he’ll be back in like 2 weeks). And sorry I misread the question, moving Koskinen frees up cap space, EDM can replace him with another backup goalie on the market. Hell, throw Anderson in there

Edmonton needs a big physical defensive player on the back end though, not another offensive defenseman. Miller is having a nice season but he's 29 and has played 7 seasons in the NHL - we know what he is and what he isn't. I don't see any reason for them to go after Colin Miller.

If that is stylistically what they are looking for then yeah doesn’t make a ton of sense
