Im torn rn between Owen Pickering and Jiri Kulich with the 25OA

As Jiri Kulich if he can develop consistency and bulk up a bit would be a nice 2-way center addition for Toronto who kind of should be eyeing C prospects rn

But at the same time Pickering has all the tools and size to be a solid future 2-way LD for us

Leafs don’t really need Pickering but id take Pickering over Kulich any day of the week, Pickering’s ceiling is just so much higher than Kulich’s

So what’s Yurovs biggest drawback?

I can’t believe it’s he’s Russian as if you’re drafting him you’re already assuming he’s committing to coming over from your draft interviews or communication with him and his team.

I think the biggest concern is the unknown, what @A_Habs_fan said. Yurov was dressed in 18 consecutive KHL games at the end of the season. In those games, he COMBINED for a total...

6 minutes and 49 seconds of ice time.

That averages out to 22 seconds a game.

How can you evaluate that.

Like any young player he needs to add weight but his transitional skills, hockey IQ, shot, and 200ft game should all translate to the NA game. His ability to attack off the rush makes him a very versatile offensive player. He is one of the more complete players in this draft class. He can play with pace and skill and strong puck retrieval in both ends. From the tape I’ve seen, he reminds me of Amirov.

I don’t believe there is anything in his game that will worry GM’s other than the Russian factor and just lack of ice time.

If he is not selected in the top 10 teams will regret that.

Not sure what other players would be eligible to join (Bedard’s not there for example, as well as Wright), but making a roster out of the invites:

Othmann-Johnston-LDBB
Roy-Geekie-Savoie
L’Heureux-Fantilli-Bolduc
Schaefer-Ostapchuk-Gaucher
Dean

Firkus snubbed because Canada will need big tough hockey men 😤😤😤 Also Bedard is making this team, LDBB is probably just a filler for him.

Nause/Allan-Clarke
Mateychuk-Ceulemans
Pickering-Korchinski
Allan/Nause-Luneau

I don’t think Allan or Nause are too good, but both are older defensive defensemen, so I think one of them gets put with Clarke (rather than Pickering, who is like, actually good but younger). Mateychuk-Ceulemans is a well-balanced 2nd pair. Pickering probably makes it as the 3LD over one of Allan/Nause, and I like Korchinski on his off-side rather than Kyrou as a 3rd pair offensive guy, although it wouldn’t surprise me if the other of Allan/Nause was there either (Korchinski would probably run PP2 if he makes it, but if he doesn’t then one of Mateychuk/Ceulemans would run PP2, and that might be the reason he’s snubbed if they think one of those two can handle it).

Gaudreau
Brennan

Gaudreau is older, Brennan is bigger. Both ~3rd round level talents. As per usual, Canada probably won’t have the tournament’s best goalie.

Gonna repost this here for some discussion. Anyone have any thoughts on the potential U20 roster? Summer camp invites here:

In case any of you guys may be interested in how 32 random guys on the internet looks at the 2022 draft class at each draft position, here’s the link to the GM Game 2022 Draft thread
( note: it is by no means close to reality, Yegor Chinakhov was a 7th in 2019 in the previous version, Brock Faber was a 7th instead of a 2nd, Tyler Boucher was a 3rd and not 10 OA, Nolan Allan was a 5th and not 32nd, etc. Also I wouldn’t recommend asking why anyone was taken at a spot unless it’s my pick )

He could end up as a solid #4, but I wouldn’t take him in the 1st rd. Not enough offfense to his game

How does everyone rank Mateychuk, Korchinski, and Mintyukov?

I think Mateychuk is clearly better than the other two but I don’t know who I’d pick between Korchinski and Mintyukov

Johnston should make the roster this time, he was the best player in the CHL this year. Not saying he’s gonna be their number 1 guy, but he should be a lock for the top 6.

Mateychuk, Korchinski, Pickering, Mintyukov would be how I’d rank the top of the LD class, Mateychuk is just so well rounded, smart and exhibits great skill. The other 3 are all projects with their own concerns but I like Korchinski and Pickering’s upside more

Why Mintyukov? My worry is that he’ll become Jake bean at the NHL level

Denton Mateychuk - don't love his defensive awareness, he is not a very good at skating backwards (important trait for Dmen) will use his stick to get into passing lanes instead of using his feet and body to stop the attacking forward. His gap controls and not very good either. Mateychuk’s game is built around his flexibility, creativity, and general quickness but I see him getting exposed in the NHL. Love the offence his brings. He will need to get drafted to a team that is not set in there dzone coverages and allows him to be a rover. If not

Pavel Mintyukov - he does such a great job at taking away time and space very well. Puts constant pressure on the puck to force turnovers and uses great gap controls to stop rushes from entering the zone. Yes he can be a little over aggressive and can put himself out of position, but boy when he lies someone up he can lay out big hits. He is physical in front of the net is excellent and for me his ability to operate in the offensive zone is tops in this class. I don't love the way Saginaw defensive systems and for me that is why sometimes he looked out of place on in the dzone, in a more structed team I can really see him flourish.

Kevin Korchinski - I am not a Korchinski guy at all. I see a ton of offence and ZERO defense. He will be a liability in the NHL giving up turnovers, making poor jumps leading to the other team going the other way. He is a guy that will make a beautiful play and make you jump out of your seat to set up or score a goal. And in the very next play through up a muffin straight to center ice leading to a breakaway goal for the other team.

Again, just my opinion. Could be dead wrong on all of this.

Maybe the spare forward, but I don't think he'd be on their 4th line. Canada does usually bring a checking line of some sort, and all of Schaefer-Ostapchuk-Gaucher are 6'3". Plus the first two are guys proven to elevate their games in the playoffs (it's a huge deal to have guys that raise their game in big moments in short tournaments), and Gaucher has a solid 2-way game and wore a letter for the Remparts. It just seems like exactly the kind of 4th line Hockey Canada loves to bring (and it does make some sense, you can't have 12 small, skilled scoring forwards after all, someone's gotta kill penalties and play a more defensive role). So if he's not on the 4th line, he's competing for a top 6 spot, so he's probably gotta beat out both LDBB and Roy (those are the two weakest spots in the top 6 imo, and I think Bedard will take one of them even though he's not at this camp). Othmann-Johnston and Geekie-Savoie should be locks (different lines because I think the first duo is better and Bedard probably ends up on that RW + keeps the Winnipeg boys together for chemistry reasons) and I think the 3rd line is again something Hockey Canada would do (Bolduc's one of the older players iirc, Fantilli is obviously elite and I think he's got the size+skill to make the team before his draft even if he's not quite Bedard's level, and L'Heureux is that classic pest, although I could see Dean being there too tbh). I don't think that will be a go-to scoring line though, so I'm not sure Kidney fits in there. I also think it would be funny if 4 guys named Zach/Zack made the team lol (Bolduc, Dean, L'Heureux, Ostapchuk).
