Habs TDL analysis

Créé par: Shire
Équipe: 2021-22 Canadiens de Montréal
Date de création initiale: 8 févr. 2022

Mode - plafond salarial: Basique
Description
To start off, Chiarot and Lehkonen are getting a 1st OR a prospect that is close to NHL ready for sure.

The top 5 players the habs want to get rid of for sure for the deadline are Petry, Toffoli, Lehkonen, Chiarot and Kulak

WIth these trades, it does not concern me how other teams get rid of their cap.
Transactions
1.
MTL
  1. Kravtsov, Vitali
  2. Lundkvist, Nils
Détails additionnels:
Rangers have shown interest in both players, but in this trade, itll only be either Lehkonen or Chiarot for either Kravstov or Lundkvist.

In order to get good players, you need to send good assets in return.
NYR
  1. Chiarot, Ben (1 750 000 $ retained)
  2. Harris, Jordan [Liste de réserve]
  3. Lehkonen, Artturi (1 000 000 $ retained)
  4. Choix de 2e ronde en 2022 (MTL)
Détails additionnels:
With Chiarot, you get someone who is built for playoffs. Low points but a huge plus for physicality and shutdown defense.

For Lehkonen, you get a sneaky good young defensive minded winger who can play up and down the line and still keep up. He is showing elite defensive analytics and is someone who is worth AT LEAST a first.

If I were to package the two, I would add one of Harris or a 2nd. For the sake of the trade, I will put both.
2.
MTL
  1. Choix de 5e ronde en 2022 (EDM)
  2. Choix de 7e ronde en 2023 (EDM)
EDM
  1. Kulak, Brett (850 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
I dont think I have to explain this one
3.
MTL
  1. Pelletier, Jakob
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2022 (CGY)
  3. Choix de 2e ronde en 2022 (CGY)
CGY
  1. Toffoli, Tyler
Détails additionnels:
No way would the habs retain on Toffoli.

Near PPG player who was top 5 in the scoring race last season. Easily one of the best contracts in the league where he is able to play with most players regardless of playstyle.
4.
MTL
  1. Tippett, Owen
  2. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (FLA)
Détails additionnels:
One of Tippett or a 1st, not both.
FLA
  1. Petry, Jeff (3 000 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Even with Petry being said to fetch a similar return to last year, I cannot see him getting more than a 1st OR a prospect worth a 1st.

first trade makes sense imo
kulak trade makes sense
however, the toffoli trade seems like too much. i get he can PP and PK, and has a career 0.60 pt pace (62 pt pace this szn) but asking for pelletier AND a first is too much. maybe a first and a second, or pelletier and a second
and finally, call me crazy, but adding tippett is a mistake unless MTL can move two of Caufield, Ylonen, Anderson, Kravtsov, Tippett, Gallagher, Armia (?) to LW. the left side is very shallow, and the two going to the left side have to be able to play 1LW and 2LW. i dont see either of the two most logical options (Anderson and Kravtsov, anderson because hes played LW before kravtsov because hes a left shot) being able to fill the 1LW position, plus having SIX right wingers is a bit much

otherwise, good job with the effort

Who says MTL wants to get rid of Toffoli? It would take a serious offer for sure to get him.

Edit:
Retaining $3M on Petry for a 1st round pick is terrible, Ristolainen got a 1st (14th overall), a 2nd, and Hagg and he is a pending UFA.

i dont know if Toffoli is someone mtl is looking to trade, by all accounts he is happy in mtl, has a solid contract and is the type of player you want your young players learning from.

secondly Harris is not a throw on prospect, hes having another great year in the NCAA and by all accounts should be in the nhl very shortly with the potential to slot into the top four in a couple years. The only reason mtl would move his rights is if they get told he will not sign in MTL because he wants to play in the states, and even then teams would probably just want till he hits free agency.

Petry and Toffoli are off season trades, unless someone ponies up a really good package for Toffoli but don't know if that happens by trade deadline.

The five players Habs want to move this trade deadline are Chairot, Wideman, Perreault, Lehkonen and possibly Kulak. Other then that they likely wait and see what the trade market is like when teams have more flexibility with cap space

That's smart. The market is flooded this spring, don't trade players if you don't have to because prices will be low.

he had 28 goals in 52 games last season: 7th top goal scorer in the league, had 4 more goals than Ovechkin or Crosby

In a division that didn't have much defense or goaltending. He's got just 9 in 33 games this season - on pace to score 19. That's hardly earth-shattering.

Pretty fair trades.
Habs don't need to add Harris and the 2nd.
Lehkonen alone gets lundqvist and kravtsov.
Therefore you would have to add a 1st and chytil for chiarot.
You could give a 3rd going to NYR.
would be mistake to trade for tippet, Habs could get 1st and good prospect for petry, so a 1st and serron noel

Unfortunately Harris doesnt seem to want to sign with Montreal (he probably wants to stay in the US or be with Boston). Definitely not a throw on, but for 2 prospects with high-end talent, hes someone we can give up with value for them.

The NYR one without Harris and a 2nd is a rental, and a elite dman, combined for 2 1sts. I can see them going 1:1 on either or, but packaging both will require more for them to want to spend their future. Lehkonen isnt a guarantee for their future if Laffy/KK pan out

Petry right now to me is worth a 1st tops. I was considering a 1:1 with Bourque in Dallas but I wasnt sure on how far that would go.

Same with the Rags post, in order to get a good asset in the now, you have to get rid of good assets in the future. Best I could do is Pelletier + a 1st.

Moves: When making the post, I was thinking that Armia, Ylonen (if he even touches the NHL), and MAYBE Gallagher could be potentially moved.

CGY: Best I could do for Toffoli is a 1st + Pelletier, gotta give up good future assets for good present assets and Toffoli legitimately has a top 5 contract in the league.

With that, I could see this as the core for the off season with those moves I mentioned:

Drouin Suzuki Caufield
Pelletier Wright Anderson
Evans Dvorak Tippett
Pezzetta Poehling Kravstov

Romanov Guhle
Norlinder Lundkvist
Clague Wideman*

This is in an ideal world where everyone pans out in terms of development and we trade Edmundson/Savard in the off season.
Also these lines would most likely take place after Byron's contract and the 2022 draft
* No plans to keep him unless we have to and he takes league minimum continuously

i dont think ylonen should be moved, he can be a decent middle six player. gallagher's contract is difficult to move but i'll entertain you and say that he gets moved.
drouin is probably gone in FA, so

Pelletier - Wright - Caufield
Kravtsov - Suzuki - Tippett
Anderson - Dvorak - Gallagher
Pezzetta - Poehling - Evans

Romanov - Guhle
Norlinder - Lundkvist
Clague - Wideman

leaves a hole at 1LW

I disagree with that. Pelletier has proven this year to be one of the top forward prospects in the league. I probably wouldn't trade him 1 for 1 with Caufield. I consider their value incredibly similar

Habs fans are the worst in the league for overvaluing their players and prospects. Carter Savoie has outperformed Caufield in D+1 and D+2 so far by NHLe and yet they think Caufield is one of the most valuable players in the league but guys like Savoie and Pelletier are throw-ins on a trade guy with 9 goals in over half a season.
