  1. Choix de 1e ronde en 2022 (STL)
Détails additionnels:
Chiarot is not worth the 1st but that's what it's come to be due to media. This will probably be the only overpayment they'll receive at the deadline.
STL
  1. Chiarot, Ben (1 750 000 $ retained)
2.
MTL
  1. Hájek, Libor
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2022 (NYR)
  3. Choix de 6e ronde en 2023 (NYR)
Détails additionnels:
There's a lot of people and media sources saying Lehkonen is worth a 1st but he really shouldn't be. He's a very solid all around 3rd liner and will probably need a pay bump next year being an RFA. A thing that might scare away teams from acquiring him would be that a team can offer sheet him and them not having the cap to match.
3.
MTL
  1. Choix de 7e ronde en 2022 (CAR)
Détails additionnels:
Paquette can go anywhere but Carolina might make sense. Also not sure if they can get value back for him but a 7th would be the highest it goes.
4.
MTL
  1. Choix de 7e ronde en 2023 (TBL)
Détails additionnels:
Wideman can be a depth guy who steps in in case of injury or a guy they can inject to create more offense from the blueline too.
5.
MTL
  1. Choix de 6e ronde en 2023 (MIN)
Détails additionnels:
Perreault can be a bottom 6 offensive contributor on the wild and is also a cheap rental.
6.
MTL
  1. Choix de 2e ronde en 2022 (NSH)
Détails additionnels:
Nashville probably needs a solid backup to help them win games but also take the workload off of Saros before the playoffs hit. He's also signed for another year so their goaltending tandem would be set for next year as well.
NSH
  1. Allen, Jake (875 000 $ retained)
  2. Choix de 6e ronde en 2023 (NYR)
7.
MTL
  1. Välimäki, Juuso
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2022 (FLA)
Détails additionnels:
Valimaki should be a player the Canadiens are all over. He's promising young dman who should be playing in the NHL, but Calgary doesnt' have space for him. With the proper development, Valamaki will be a solid second pairing guy for majority of his career.
CGY
  1. Toffoli, Tyler
  2. Choix de 4e ronde en 2022 (MTL)
8.
MTL
  1. Choix de 5e ronde en 2023 (CAR)
Détails additionnels:
Hurricanes always seem to be in the market for a dman and they are again this year. A solid bottom pairing guy for a cheap price is a fair deal for both.
9.
MTL
  1. Choix de 5e ronde en 2022 (BOS)
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (BOS)
Détails additionnels:
Byron is a good bottom 6 guy who has a great all around game. I think he'd fit well under the Boston system and at the retained salary, he should be an attractive trade piece for any team.

He should this year, it might not be Chiarot but the blues need a top 4 LD to strengthen their lineup. I believe they can make a deep run with the help of some rentals this year.

Blues pass. If they were going to do this, they'd have done it already. Boston passes, Nashville passes, and you should probably check the cap situation for some of these other teams.

Armstrong learned his lesson about overpaying for rentals eons ago. And Chiarot is not better than what they already have. Somebody else can over pay for him.

You seem to be pretty high on Valimaki (apparently higher than I am) but to me it seems like you're selling low on Toffoli

IMHO, Toffoli is your most valuable trade asset

The only cap situation im unsure about is the Carolina one. Most of the trades can be different teams but same value in return. Byron is still a 3rd or 4th line guy, I'd take off the 5th, so Byron at 2 mil in exchange for a 3rd would be a decent deal for both sides.

A backup goalie is really important for teams, and Nashville needs one to help out Saros. You don't want your goalie playing 65+ games and then going to playoffs every year, so having Allen take tge workload off would be ideal, plus his salary is retained making it more comfortable for NSH to acquire him.

For the Chiarot trade, I just chose a team that needed a LD but it could definitely be some other team. I know the blues are a team looking for a top 4 LD so chiarot isn't too far out of the picture. They for sure could use the help of another dman though this year as the team can very well make a playoff run.

He is probably their most valuable asset this year, but Valimaki is a former 1st round pick who's shown promise. His analytics have been slightly below average but it's something you can expect from a guy who doesn't play often, gets bottom pairing minutes, and is in and out of the lineup. From what I've seen watching him, I can see that he has the potential to be a solid player in the future if he continues to develop well. I still value Valimaki as a late 1st round pick so the trade is essentially still a 1st and 2nd for Toffoli and the 4th. Maybe the 4th would be moved down to a 6th but that's the value I believe Toffoli would get back.

1- Byron has played all of one game this season, and he was terrrrible in that game. He's a tiny 32-year-old with a bum hip and another year of 3.4M on his deal. And the Bruins don;t have 2M in cap anyway.

2- Nashville does not need a back-up. Frankly I'm not even sure why they went out to get Rittich. Ingram is more than capable. Any way you slice it, a 2nd is too much for a back-up that has slumped for most of the last two season.

3- The Blues are looking for a good top 4. Maybe. Don;t believe everything you read.

Here's the thing when it comes to Trade Deadlines (or sometimes even before).
Most of the time its a seller's market due to the "high demand" of teams either in contention, or teams looking to make a splash in the playoffs and think they're chances are great.
When you add to that playoff proven experience AND team friendly contracts - you now have players being traded for MUCH MORE THAN WHAT THEY"RE WORTH.
When you add to this the fact that Montreal can not only retain salary, but also take on bad contracts to help the other team out - MONTREAL IS IN AN AMAZING BARGANING POSITION!!!!

this is what people on this board fail to understand.

I see comments like Chiarot and Lekhonen are not worth that - YES, you're right - but they will be come Trade deadline day, due to the aforementioned reasons.

Chiarot can easily score a 1st and prospect (with retained salary and a contract coming the other way).
Lekhonen can easily score a 2nd and a prospect (with a contract coming the other way)
Kulak can easily score a mid round pic (4th). Perrault and Pacquette (4th. to 5th.)
Toffoli (although I don't think he'll be traded) will easily get you a 1st and a high end prospect. (no salary retention but maybe a contract coming the other way.)

If anyone thinks that Hughes and Gorton won't bleed the market dry for whatever they can , then they've been living under a rock for the last few trade deadlines.

Paquette was a Cane last year, and he spent the year in the press box. There's no reason to open that door again.

Kulak might make sense. Lebrun suggests the Canes are looking for a defenseman, although I'd imagine it's another top 4 guy instead of a bottom pairing guy when they've got Ian Cole and Ethan Bear for that role

Not sure how the Canes can really improve on their top 4 d pairs without swapping one of them out. Canes won’t do do that, and while extra scoring from the blue line would be great, aren’t the Canes also at the top of the league in point production by dmen? If a move is made, it would very likely be for a top 6 scoring winger and a backup goalie who is less injury prone than Raanta. There really isn’t any other needs for the Canes at the moment.

Sure I agree with the values pretty much. Chariot gets a 1st if think and lehkonen gets a 2nd and a decent prospect. The secondary guys idk, there are a lot of teams with depth guys teams can go with instead but the values seem close enough.

In their own zone, Carolina are actually the worst analytical team in hockey. They're incredibly overdependent on Andersen. They don't allow many shooting chances, but they allow GOLDEN ones when they do. It's a really difficult situation. My guess would be a more stable DFD to replace TDA on the top pairing, maybe even using someone like Cole as trade bait. They need to improve on the back end, and I don't get paid to tell them how. Otherwise, Raanta is actually one of the best backups in the league, he's just injury prone. I'd rather have him for the playoffs than anyone else. It might be worth carrying three goalies in that sense. Another top 6 winger would be great, ideal. But the more pressing need is the blueline.

You never see a team overpay for rentals at the deadline. The only overpay I see this year would be for Chiarot which would likely be a 1st (maybe something added more). Teams aren't giving away big value for 30 games and playoffs for a third line guy. For toffoli, I can see a team trading a 1st and a good prospect but definitely not a top end prospect.
