I can't say for certain in which role Klingberg would fit in Carolina, but by playstyle I'd have to assume he'd be a Hamilton replacement. He's played first pair for pretty much his whole time in Dallas, and he's clocked 22 minutes per on average without really playing PK. That's first pair minutes. And I'd argue CAR has no better RHDs than Klingberg is.
If a price of a solid prospect plus first (which ironically is around the same asking price as MTL has for f*cking Chiarot) is too much, then what do you think is fair? Because it seems we see the guy in a very different light.
Canes don’t need to trade Gardiner, he’s on LTIR the rest of the year. Next year they may need to dump his contract or buy it out, but no need for relief this year, they already have it.
To take on Klingberg, the Canes would have to send salary back. They’re very likely set up front, so no roster forwards to trade. That leaves defenseman. They’re not trading Slavin, Pesce, Skjei or DeAngelo. Cole is a good 5-6 and on an expiring deal, wouldn’t really make sense to trade him. No one is going to want Brendan Smith, plus he’s cheap depth at league minimum. That leaves Ethan Bear at $2M and RFA status. Any deal for Klingberg will include Bear, in my view.
IMO, DeAngelo has rightfully claimed the RD slot next to Slavin. They’re not going to breakup up Skjei-Pesce, so Klingberg would, at this moment, slot in on the 3rd pair. That’s not a player you spend a lot on. If DeAngelo falters, maybe, but he’s been much better than anticipated defensively and he’s been dynamite offensively, outperforming Klingberg by a good margin so far. Klingberg would be a luxury, not a necessity. The Canes would be better off going for a Braun or Manson type.
My best offer for Klingberg would be Bear + Bokk or Joey Keane. That’s not enough? Oh well. There’s a good number of rental D on the market this year that would slot in much better as the depth the Canes may be looking at that fit the team’s needs better and cost much less.
