Description
This AGM is based on Avs acquiring Giroux and re-sign him in the offseason.

Copp (UFA) and Lehkonen (RFA) are two players who would fit this teams to a "T" and I envisage that they are players that Sakic will target this offseason.

In 2023 most of EJ's $6m slides over to cover Mackinnon's raise. Newhook and Byram would need bridge deals, and that would probably require having to trade someone (eg. Toews/Girard) to make room unless the cap rises considerably.

Note: Cap projected to go up to $82.5m.

If MTL trade Lehky it’s probably at the TDL for an overpay, if he is still here after the TDL, I think that means they keep him

a 2nd isn't impossible for lehky but it's definitely an overpay. adding a prospect is crazy.

By B prospect I meant someone like Bowers or lower in the prospect ranking. I.e. not an important piece.

Lehkonen will be in demand at the deadline which might push his value up to a 2nd or 2nd+. I'd imagine that the acquiring team will want to extend him with some term this offseason though (when he's an RFA), but with only one year of team control Lehkonen can control his destination to some extent. Whatever the case he'd be an excellent fit on the 3rd line, and shouldn't be too expensive to extend given his lack of offensive production until now.

not sure he cracks the 3rd line.

I like this a lot. The only thing im iffy on is Giroux's term. He's getting up there in age and would be 37 by the final year of that contract

Depends on the prospect, but I think a 2024 2nd is a little too far away for the Habs to trade

I'd try to keep Jost out of the trade. The team is a bit weak down the middle if there are any injuries. Alternatively I guess you could go after an inexpensive UFA.

Well since the rumour is he might get a first (think Goodrow & Coleman) i'm pretty sure a 2nd round pick isnt an overpay. Lehkonen supplies a lot of value to cup contenders.

Literally almost every platform there has been a Lehkonen trade rumour. In my opinion he does have a lot of value but I would be surprised if he did get a first. But I would be more surprised if he got something lower than a 2nd.

Everything is speculation/rumour until it comes to fruition. But when there is smoke there usually is fire. We can only debate on here until it happens. If/when Lehkonen gets traded we can reengage in coversation.

Any team that acquires Lehkonen will likely want to have assurances from him/his agent that he's willing to sign an extension in the offseason. In that sense he probably controls his destination a bit, as Montreal will want to maximise return, and the return will be greater from a team who he's willing to extend with.

He is still a rfa after this season. So he doesn't much control at all

I think you missed my point. Yes, he is an RFA, but with only one year of team control left. An acquiring team isn't going to want to resign him to a 1 year contract. Rather, to get maximum value they'll want to extend him long-term, and for that they will need assurances from him that he's willing to extend with them. Otherwise they'll just be in a position of trading him as a pending UFA at next years deadline.
Granted, it's not much leverage, certainly not as much as with UFA's or players with NMC's, but there's at least some leverage.
