Problem with this is that Petry has a better track record than Myers. He is having a bad season, but Habs need a pick going their way.

Petry is having a terrible season, but had his best season last year and has a history of being consistently good.

Myers is having a terrible season and has been bad for a while now.

This is an easy pass for the Habs.

Only way habs would do this is with a sweetner. Plus I think if were trading Petry, we will try to get positive value for him and if we cant just keep him and let him bounce back.

Canucks aren't doing this purely because Myers' contract ends earlier

Myers isn't having a terrible season and hasn't been bad for years. He's not a good stylistic fit beside Hughes or OEL though. I agree Petry has a chance to bounce back to an extent but he's 34, chances are his days as a point producing top dman are done.

Canucks definitely wouldn't add in this situation as they're taking back the older player, more expensive contract, and longer term.

I doubt Petey has positive value at this point. His age and contract is just too much. Definitely a chance he can bounce back to an extent but at his age his days of being as good as he was the past 3 seasons is probably over.

My thought here is the Habs are likely going to rebuild so this gets them cap space a year earlier while still getting a dman that plays 22+ minutes a night to eat minutes. Canucks take the higher risk and extra year of term but get a dman that is probably a better stylistic fit beside Hughes or OEL.

It's not a bad idea, but I doubt MTL would hit the panick button already after only one bad season from Petry. The only upside here is Myer's contract is up one year sooner... but Petry still has a little value so there's really nothing to gain by getting rid of his contract and taking Myers back in return.

Again, Petry literally had his best season last year. And Myers isn't the type of player Montreal needs, even if we're charitable with his quality of play. This just isn't a trade that they'd consider.

The idea of adding Petry over Myers is sound, but Montreal isn't going to give Petry away for the sake of one year. Petry will bounce back and could still hold value as a rental in his final year. Myer's value has already bottomed out.

Minimum if Montreal does this would maybe be Woo and a 2nd. One piece for Petry's potential sell price down the road and one piece for making the exchange for Myers.

What's even the point of this? Like, the premise doesn't even make sense.

Just speaking from the Habs POV here, if you're trying to get better, your not. If you're trying to save cap or salary, its not that much savings. Whatever it is you are trying to achieve, there are simpler ways to go about that.

If Myers had a year fewer left they may consider it but with still 2 more years after this one its not worth it.

Petry since getting time off to heal his foot injury has started to look more like the old petry. has 3 points in his last 7 games. It would make sense for the habs to hold onto him until the end of the season let him rebuild some value and trade him in the offseason rather than dumping him for a worse player who is still on a very bad contract.

The idea is the Habs are going to rebuild so this deal gets them cap space in 2yrs rather than 3yrs while still having a serviceable dman that plays 22+minutes a night.

Canucks take back the older dman with an extra year of term but is a better fit stylistically beside Hughes or OEL and hope that he's able to bounce back to an extent.

If Habs rebuild, they won't "need" cap space in that 3rd year. Whoever they draft won't even be done their ELC yet. if they rebuild, everyone of value is going so their will be tons of cap space.

I get what your saying but I also don't think Petry waives for VAN. If the goal is to rebuild, keep Petry and hope he gets better, then trade him or simply buy him out if he doesn't. If you buy him out you save more money and cap and If he plays good, you'll actually get a good return for him. win/win. Trading him now is a lose/small win.

Trading Petry for Myers now serves no purpose. Whatever you want to do, save money, get better, get worse, etc, there is a better way to accomplish that.
