I'd have to dig into Giordano a little more before I'm good with this one. When the Blues played the Kraken he looked slow and kinda ineffective.

But getting Scandella off the books is a positive, and Kostin isn't doing enough to be considered a long-term asset in my opinion, so it really just comes down to whether they can afford to lose a 1st for a rental. If it boosts the defense out of the bottom-10 where they are now, maybe it's worth it. Usually rentals don't pay off, but Gio - if he's not totally washed (maybe some Kraken fans can evaluate him better than me) - brings a lot of attractive qualities and might even stay for another year afterward.

The only other thought I have is that Scandella's offseason buyout isn't very hard on the books. Armstrong probably doesn't consider it (he hasn't bought anyone out), but if they could figure out a way to add D at the deadline without having to pay to move Scandella, they'd have better depth and more assets leftover.

Big part of Giordano that people miss on the eye test is that he makes the game look effortless, which when he's playing on a bad Flames team from years past or a bad Kraken team it can look slow and ineffective. Positionally he has been elite, I haven't watched enough of him to gauge this year but he does every small thing right. For a Blues comparison, think Jay Bouwmester with more offensive upside still. Giordano is likely a top ten fitness guy in the league, he's a physical freak with an endless motor.

Good point, that's why I was a little wary of judging him from a couple of games. It helps that he wasn't getting 20+ minutes until age 26, his NHL mileage isn't as high as most guys at 38. He seems like a guy that the Blues will be interested in. They're going to have to do something. Parayko has been outscored 31-50 at 5v5 this season - he needs some help if they want to make a run.

After watching Gio, his positioning overall is light years ahead of Parayko, Scandella, and Mikkola right now. Personally, I think the Blues could benefit more from a straight up stay at home guy and let Parayko do his thing without having to feel like he has to overcompensate for lesser defensemen

a playoff Gio doesn't get you that. He's a UFA which isn't worth a 1st at all.
