Description
Now you might ask why would a Stanley Cup winning team chose to sell? Well, I don't know, but it will probably be difficult to keep everyone the next season cuz they will all demand raises, so you may as well trade some while their values are high and hope to get back some elite players who can be further developed.

You traded for Strome as an RFA, signed him as an RFA, but wrote him in as a UFA signing. That isn't how this works. Strome has 12 points in 25 games this year and wont be relatively expensive. He isnt getting cut.

What I meant to write is that he doesn’t get qualified and goes to free agency.

Leafs wouldn't go for that, I agree that Marner is probably the first to go if there is another playoff implosion but they would never accept that trade, a decent forward, an aging big contract defenseman and a 2nd rounder is not nearly enough quality for Marner. Lafreniere definitely hasn't lived up to expectations but he also hasn't been awful, so that trade isn't necessarily unfair but I doubt New York would be eager to give up on him so quickly. But yes I do think that the Boston trade is very lopsided in Pittsburgh's favour. A couple of those contracts are very questionable too, i.e. Letang, Rust, Rodrigues.

Thanks for the insight. My understanding of the Marner situation from Leafs Twitter is that he is a must trade at all costs at the end of the season. Basically an addition by subtraction type situation. So TOR would have to pull the trigger even if they don’t get much back. And I think my offer isn’t bad, Matheson has been an excellent 2-3 guy for PIT so he’d be a dealbreaker.

I think I’ve given up more than enough for Lafreniere, though I understand why NYR will be hesitant to trade him. I just think they’re better off trading him for win-now pieces.

My opinion on Marner is not that he isn’t good, but he needs a change of scenery. And you don’t think McGinn or Matheson are good return pieces? A top 6 F and a top 4 D with term?

IDK what Marner is worth but I feel I’m giving up too much for Lafreniere. It is a lot to sacrifice 2 proven players for a physical complimentary piece, but the Pens need grit badly and Laf has some upside.

Marner has been and will probably continue to be a 70+ point player, he is quite good despite what hockey twitter may say about him. McGinn is playing on Pittsburgh's 4th line and is not a top 6 forward. Matheson's contract doesn't make sense for the Leafs to take back if their objective is to clear cap.

i think you have too much recency bias. Laffy is still a recent number 1 pick and Marner almost got 100 points not so long ago. I'd love these trades, but you gotta give up way more. The contracts aren't too bad tho.

McGinn is a solid 2 way player who forechecks hard and can give you 40 points, possibly more with the right linemates. Matheson has a long contract but the Leafs need a 2RD right now and he’s exactly that!

Thanks for the feedback. Tbh, I think everyone suffers from recency bias, there’s too much of the what have you done for me lately mentality.

I just don’t get you man. You do a zucker for hall trade, everyone tells you that its preposterous, and here you are just beating your head against the same wall.

There is no possible scenario where a zucker for hall trade works.
    Bruins don’t want zucker
    Bruins want hall
Hall wants to be in boston
Hall doesn’t want to be in Pittsburgh.

    This is very simple.

You’re giving up a player with one good season and an okay 2!d liner for a recent first overall pick. It’s not close at all. You also aren’t getting an elite winger for basically scraps

Thanks for the feedback. I understand BOS may not want to trade Hall but I think the value is fair and they would benefit from the pieces they’re getting, so that’s why I proposed it.
