Description
Let Smith's contract run out with Skinner up and down from the A when needed. Holtby could be a good option if Holland isn't looking to make a big splash and give up a lot of future assets. Let Holloway ripen a bit playing less minutes or even down in the A. And hope one of the d prospects like Broberg step up and make the left side a strength to support the right side. Signing a guy like Miller to shorter term deal leaves money for Bouchard to grow and maybe the team looks at upgrading the d-core either in 22-23, or next year when Keiths contract is up.

Détails additionnels:
As much as it pains me to say i think getting rid of Barrie might be the only option to pickup higher quality goaltending next season. I don't think Barrie is a bad player just has a high cap hit, used a second to value the cap space based on Ghost trade to AZ last year. Doesn't have to be montreal just any team looking for powerplay defenseman.

so you want the habs, who have the highest cap hit in the nhl, to take on a multi year contract for just a 2nd rd pick? buddy you need to add a 1st at least to unload him

Edmonton doesnt have to pay to get rid of Barrie. He's not overpaid. They could get a second round pick for him.

Do the habs have the highest cap in the nhl or is the NHLPA paying price's salary?

I would love it if they could, just not sure how many teams have the cap space or don't already have a powerplay quarter back.

I think Barrie is one of the best powerplay defenseman in the league which is shown by leading all dmen in scoring last year. But relatively average 5v5 play makes him a very specialty player that limits the amount of teams that would like to bring him in with the cap hit.

Relative average 5 on5? Try literally one of the worst.

To be fair if you assume 50 % of the time 5v5 is spent in offensive zone, Barrie is above average in offensive zone.
The other 50% spent in the defensive zone he is below average.

You can argue his defensive weakness is greater than his offensive skill, but he does still make good plays at 5v5.

He had more points than Fox, Hedman, Makar, Hamilton, Josi, Carlson, Hughes, Petro, and Jones last year.... he's not "terrible"

Nobody is denying he's a very good OFD. If only he didn't have to play defense.

Yes I agree he isn't great defensively but he is so skilled offensively that he is not a "terrible" player, just needs to be implemented correctly.

Barrie isn't a cap dump and Skinner can't go "up and down from the A when needed" next year because he won't be waivers exempt.

Miller is a poor-man's Tyson Barrie, that's a whole lot of poor asset management going on right there.

He's average defensively. As I said before, positive GF% rel says he's outscoring his mistakes at a greater rate than his teammates. He's not a cap dump. If he was good defensively he'd be making $9M, to pretend that he's a dump at $4.5M is a ridiculously ignorant take.

Can't say I disagree with you. My only point is keeping Barrie means the only upgrade that can be made to the blue line next year is the 3rd left shot D. and with minor pay raises to Pulji, Yamo, and McLeod that doesn't leave much money at all for a goaltending improvement. Yes everyone says trade Kassian but he is one of our most physical forwards that makes this team much harder to play against. Replacing Kassian with Sceviour or Benson on the third line next year doesn't make this team very much better...

is kassian one of the most physical forwards? he is a ghost right now. Benson is more physical and a bigger agitator right now. There is Holloway or mcleod who can play up the lineup and Hyman who can shift to the right side.
