Description
Stars sell non-core assets at the deadline and pay Buffalo to take Khudobin, to give themselves more cap flexibility to re-sign all of their core pieces, while having ~$5-7M (depending if Smith goes on LTIR) of cap space to pursue a playoff rental or two to try and win it all.
Transactions
1.
DAL
  1. Niemeläinen, Markus
  2. Smith, Mike
Détails additionnels:
Stars cash out on Holtby and bring back a prospect in return.
EDM

  2. Kiviranta, Joel
Détails additionnels:
Oilers land the goalie they're looking for at a relatively low price.
2.
DAL
  1. Borowiecki, Mark
Détails additionnels:
Stars move Suter to give themselves more cap flexibility and bring back a veteran enforcer with an expiring contract in return.
NSH
  1. Suter, Ryan
Détails additionnels:
Suter goes back to Nashville, to help them in their quest for the Cup.
3.
DAL
  1. Dell, Aaron
Détails additionnels:
Stars land a fringe NHL/AHL 3rd goalie for the remainder of the season and use a pick to pay Buffalo to take Khudobin's final year.
BUF

  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2022 (DAL)
Détails additionnels:

Edmonton should do that if it was offered, they might prefer to keep Smith and send you Koskinen retained which probably works better for Dallas anyway, would assume the Stars would prefer a pick for Holtby though.

Aside from Suter probably not being welcome back in NSH, his cap hit, age, and term aren't exactly desirable. NSH has a surplus of young guys who'll be fighting over that 3rd LD spot next season. Bringing in Suter to block them for years makes little sense.

I’d take him back in a heartbeat. He’s still good and having him would mean when/if Ekholm or Josi are injured the team shouldn’t struggle like they did with Ekholm out recently. Allows Farrance to take his time developing and Davies can play either side so he can come up next season next to suter

You really want Suter taking up space on the bottom pairing at that cap hit until he's 40?

You haven't seen Suter play much this year if you think he's still good. He's a 3rd pair LD at best & he's got 3 years remaining on his contract with a full NMC attached. I don't see him waiving his NMC just 1 year into his contract, but even if he did I'm not going near that contract if I'm Nashville.

Eh I’m not adverse to it but I was bummed when he left and may just be a bit nostalgic and letting that cloud my judgement.
