Description
Mayfield will probably not be traded. If for some reason he is this is the price.
His recent/current comparables savard and chiarot (all sources say chiarot will get a 1st at the deadline) went for that. Hes a cost controlled top 4 RHD with 2 years left on his deal, thats salary cap gold.
I understand that he would not be a good fit in torontos system but that doesnt mean the islanders should sell low. If you arent willing to pay a 1st or the equivelant (and quantity does not equal quality) then dont bother trading for him. This is what its going to take to get him.

Trust me, I know leafs fans can be a little stupid.

But Mayfield is AT BEST, the 4th best D man on the Islanders. You're likely getting a 2nd and a very good prospect for him, there's no world where he returns a first. Chiarot is different because that's a pro-rated 1 year deal where it doesn't matter after July 1st (in a normal year, I know free agency doesn't start this year until like the 14th)

I think the Isle should keep their star defensive defenceman who allows more goals against than any other defenceman on their team. He may find some success sometimes on a defence only scheme like Trotz employs but he's not in the top 6 on any team that requires possession and movement. He's not worth a 1st. He may not even be worth a 4th. In Keefe's system, he wouldn't play.

He's the best isle defenceman.....at getting scored on this year. Literally has been on the ice for over a quarter of their goals against. People on here just don't bother looking into anything. They just read what fans say and accept it as long as it agrees with their opinion.

Which is why all non leaf fans know all leaf depth players suck. Despite being a top 5 team, no one outside of their core 4 would make any other team somehow. Which means somehow that the core 4 both are overrated and also carry the depth to top 5 in the NHL heights because none of them will ever make any other team.

If you can explain that logic then you can call Leaf fans stupid.

At 1.45 the 2nd year is quite an asset not a negative.

We've had many conversations on many threads on the mayfield subject but you still havent been able to give me 1 reason why if savard and chiarot get 1sts mayfield doesnt? You give me your own reasoning on why he isnt worth a 1st and keefes system and a system supposedly perfect for him but gms have clearly shown that they value those types of players, and are willing to pay a 1st for them. Actual nhl gms not pleasebanmeformyowngood on capfriendly. So as politely as possible i couldnt give 2 f*cks why you think mayfield shouldnt get a 1st. I want to know why you think he wont given the price gms will pay for his comparables.

Depending on what you consider a 'very good prospect' I'd probably rather send a 1st than a 2nd and said prospect. This is in regards to any deal, not specific to Mayfield.

I'd also value the extra year on Mayfield's deal as opposed to a rental like Chiarot, not view it as a negative.

Chiarot hasn't got a 1st and I doubt he will. If he does it's going to go down as a terrible move by that GM. Chiarot is worse than Mayfield. He's having an absolute abysmal season. This is just what this site does though. It's a sounding board for fans to find other fans who also believe that if they make a trade they should win it in a massively landslide otherwise it's not fair to them. Mayfield is a 6th defenceman on most teams and doesn't make several. He is a potential 2nd pair guy in a few systems that nullify all his weaknesses and prioritize his strengths, like Trotz system. Although when you see he's been on the ice for over a quarter of his team's goals against (this is a fact not made up nonsense), it makes one question whether he actually is succeeding in a system that works for him. The way I see it, he's not very good this year. So why would a guy not doing a good job right now be worth a 1st?

Did you really try to use a Chiarot trade that hasn't happened yet as a comparable? Like....really? So when Chiarot ends up going for a 2nd, should Mayfield get a 2nd since it's his comparable and he was clearly the 2nd choice to that team?

Depends on the team. Some teams with major cap crunches this summer needing that space to re-sign crucial players in big positions (JACK CAMPBELL) will prefer the rental route.

I'm suggesting a B prospect and a 2nd is probably what you get.

Again, Chiarot being up THIS summer will be more valuable to some teams. Toronto especially will probably prefer the cap space to re-sign someone like Campbell than the 7th defenseman

i think you’re trying to oversell how bad he is. his underlying numbers are all pretty decent albeit not amazing. he’s a plus player on the ice. he’s currently on the isles’ top pair, which really he shouldn’t be but with pulock hurt there’s not another option, and he’s been fine if a bit out of his depth. this “on the ice for a quarter of the team’s GA” stat is really not as damning as you’re claiming, the isles are top 5 in the league in goals against and he plays over a third of the game, it’s not that many goals against in reality.

His underlying numbers are negative across the board. He is in fact not a plus player. He just fits in the system of only defence the Islanders play. He absolutely isn't what TO needs.
