Mathematically it's not too late, but realistically it's a lot of ground to cover, and I don't think they should be paying assets to try to salvage the season. Just let whatever happens happen. Certainly, Phil Kessel is not the answer. He's pretty over the hill at this point.

It's hard with the Islanders because a lot of it depends on how well other teams play. If Boston plays at the same pace they have so far this season, they will finish up the season in the last wild card spot at 106 points. If the Islanders play at the same pace they've been playing since the end of that bad losing streak, they'll end at 102 points. They need to not only play .700+ points % hockey but for another team to fall off too.

No this season isn't salvageable for the Islanders, they need to sell and retool in the offseason.
