Description
NOTES FROM 2022-2023 TEAM
Assuming cap goes up by $1M, as was announced earlier this year.
Final Cap Hit did only end up at $81.1M, so would work even if cap stays flat.

Initial Moves:
--Trade Greenway to clear cap space.

FA Contract Comps:
--Fiala: Similar to Kyle Connor/Nikolaj Ehlers contracts (6x$7M)
--Kaapo: Similar to Jack Cambell contract (2x$1.65M)
--Dewer: Similar to Carter Verhaeghe contract (3x$1M)

Minor Roster Moves:
--Sign McBain to deal as soon as BC's year ends. AHL in 2022-23 season, hopefully 4C by 2023-24.
--Sign Wallstedt to ELC. Give him a year in the AHL in 2022-23. 1A/1B with Kaapo in 2023-24.
--Sign some older draft picks to AHL deals.

NOTES FROM 2023-2024 TEAM
Assuming cap goes up by $1M, similar to 2022.
Not sure if this will be true, but this likely does not work without a minor increase... even with $1M increases each of the next few years, the cap is pretty tight here as I have no room for any scratches/depth players. Maybe that can be made up for by saving $100-250k on some of the contracts signed, but either way, things are tight.

Just wanted to see if there was a way to keep Fiala AND Dumba AND not trade anyone else significant. If the cap can't be worked out, my preferred option would be to trade Zuccarello at this point to clear cap space, as he should only have a 10-team NTC. I see this as preferable to losing Dumba or Fiala.

FA Contract Comps:
--Boldy: Similar to Brock Boeser contract (3x$5.875M)
--Addison: Similar to Jake Bean contract (2x$2.333M)
--Dumba: Similar to Nate Schmidt contract/current contract (5x$5M) -- This is likely a "hometown discount" contract. Not sure if it's realistic or not.
--Duhaime: Similar to Carter Verhaeghe/Dewer contract (2x$1M)

Happy to discuss in the comments! Please let me know your thoughts on any contracts signed, trades made, alternate options you think would have been better.

These are well thought out proposals, nice work. If I’m being nitpicky, the Boldy and Addison contracts look a bit steep for my taste. But that could def be argued and i applaud you for including comps. Overall I think you hit the mark on a lot here.

Thank you!

The Boldy and Addison contracts were tough just given the limited sample size at the NHL level, but if anything I wanted to err on the high side to see if everything could still fit. I'm also super high on Boldy at the moment given how quickly he's stepped in and contributed, but will be interesting to see how he continues to develop.

Makes sense yeah, I kinda figured you were erring on the high side just to see how the dollars could fall. But agreed, Boldy has looked great.

I do think it’s going be key that he has a speedier, natural play driver type like Fiala on his line. Boldys obviously got high IQ and passes the puck well, but I think teams could bottle him up if there isn’t someone else pushing the pace and finding open ice. Long winded way of saying, I hope they keep Fiala.

Agreed on Boldy pairing great with a speedy play-driver like Fiala. And that was kind of what prompted this whole exercise of seeing if there's a way to keep Fiala and Dumba.

In a bucket, if you have to keep one or the other I think it makes us better long-term to keep Fiala, but I just don't see them dumping Dumba after giving him the "A" this year. He seems like such a core part of that room, and I just don't think Guerin will get rid of one of the key team leaders.

Hopefully both can be kept, but should be interesting to see what the plan is.

Agree on all accounts. From a purely on ice perspective, I think you’d have to choose Fiala over Dumba if forced. Especially if you’re thinking long term and factoring in Addisons development. That said, it’s obvious Dumba brings a lot of leadership to the room and Guerin values him.

My gut take is that Dumba’s gonna take a discount to stay. Might be naive, but my sense is that he loves it here and values his leadership role.

As for Fiala, I think he was basically as good as gone this offseason before Boldy arrived. Now, not as much. I think there’s a chance Guerin extends him. Kinda depends how this year plays out, but it’s certainly looking like something you want to keep together. I think Fiala is a lot less replaceable than fans realize.

It will be def interesting.
