Description
Upon hearing that Columbus is one of a handful of teams in on Chychrun, this is the only thing that seems to make sense to me that the Jackets could/should move out for him. I'm aware the asking price involves picks/prospects but with the lack of Laine's fit in Columbus, he's the most expendable, but also one of the most significant trade pieces we have.

Maybe this takes a three way deal with a third party team looking for offense and power play help and they send picks and prospects to Arizona, but off the top of my head I'm not sure who would fit the bill for that. Maybe the Kings/ Ducks/ Preds possibly?

If I was arizona in this scenario, I would be concerned with the lack of term on Laine and the possibility of him dipping in free agency as soon as he could, so if I was Bill Armstrong I'd only entertain sending Chychrun to CBJ with Laine leaving Columbus only if a third team was willing to send ARI a picks and prospects haul for Laine.

As a jackets fan, as talented as Laine is, we're still a weak team down the middle and defensively despite offensive talent on the wings. With young wingers like Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson in the system as well, I think it's best to part ways with Laine. And if there happens to be a way to bring in a stud defenseman like Chychrun in while only losing Laine and maybe a prospect or another player... I'd definitely be ok with that. But if it takes picks and prospects to move for Chychrun I'm definitely less sold on moving for him. With the pick and prospect haul being asked, it'd probably take one of our high firsts in 2022, a top end younger guy (KJ/Marchenko/Silly/Boqvist) and more to get Chychrun and for a retooling squad that isn't worth it to me.

What do you think Arizona fans or general hockey fans? Who could be a third party in a trade to acquire Laine? What kind of pick/prospect package would you actually ask from CBJ for Chychrun if a three way deal involving Laine couldnt be worked out?

Trading for Chychrun doesn't make any sense for Columbus. Like you said they would likely have to give up one of their picks this year (likely the higher one) & one of (Johnson/Marchenko/Sillinger/Boqvist) + potentially something else. A reason why Chychrun has such a high price is because of his contract, he gets paid like a #3 defenseman which makes him extremely valuable to contending teams. Columbus at the moment isn't a playoff team and adding Chychrun alone won't push them over the edge. Unless Columbus feels by trading for him now, they can add some more pieces in future (whether it's through trades, free agency or prospects) that push them into playoff contention in the next year or two.

Will need a third team. Odds of liane being willing to sign in Arizona seems doubtful so they would then have to flip him why do the extra leg work when it’s not needed and have offers from other teams more fitting towards the ask.

I'm 90% convinced that Laine wouldn't extend anywhere. I'm just about positive that he wants to hit UFA status next offseason (2023), and finally get the opportunity to pick where he wants to play.

That being said, money CAN absolutely buy you happiness, so I'm sure that if someone went crazy and gave him something ridiculous like 8 x $10 (he's not worth it).

Agreed, I was quite surprised to see we were in on Chychrun to begin with. Good player but such a steep price to get him.

I could see him walking himself to FA. Anyone who gives him north of 9mill is honestly crazy imo lol. Just too inconsistent of a player to invest that much money into for any franchise that wants to win a cup

Yeah...guy is absolutely a game changer, but *maybe* money isn't his primary motivation when he hit free agency? Laine was the poster boy for media beat downs during his time in Winnipeg, some of which was probably deserved, but I could absolutely see him wanting to sign in a market where he isn't the guy in the spot light...I could be 100% wrong though, because I thought Columbus would be that spot, especially with Jarmo at the healm...Maybe he just wants to see how this season goes?

That's a real possibility for sure. Like last night, Laine was awesome and was a big part of the team win. So I wouldn't be opposed to waiting it out to see what the monetary demands are, if he wants to take a paycut to stay somewhere he wants to be I can live with that.

Jackets are 3rd worst in the NHL in goals against per game and it is far from the goalies fault... Jarmo wouldn't be doing his job if he wasnt at least looking into defensive upgrades for the team.

I don't think Laine should be traded for the sake to be traded, but depending on the AAV he's looking for on his next contract it shouldn't be ruled out. He's been much better the last 3 games but we need to see that kind of play consistently from him for it to be worth making Laine a piece to build around long term.
