Overpay for Mayfield

In what way does this do anything beyond weaken the team and sell futures to do so.

I think a team would need to overpay for Mayfield for the Islanders to trade him. 1) He's on a very good deal 2) The Islanders defense has taken a hit over the past few seasons (Losing Leddy and Towes) 3)Hard to find top 4 D-man on the open market

It does not weaken the Team, as Mayfield is better than Holl, However the Leafs are giving up a lot in all trades.
Mayfield would be a greta addition though and you get more than 1 year out of him.

No he wouldn't. He's a big slow stay at home defenceman. He's Gudbranson and those guys for whatever reason still get some love despite being completely useless. The system he plays in prioritizes the very little skills he has. He's big and strong and clears the net okay but can't skate, or handle the puck. In a system where defenceman are supposed to stop zone entries, get the puck back and move it up ice under control, Mayfield would be utter trash. He's not worth anything to TO.

Wow Big, strong defender and clears the net … sounds pretty good to me as a Dman. That is what the Leafs need.
So utter trash is crazy to say and also crazy to think Holl is better. But that said it’s the reason I love reading your comments cause you think the Leaf players are better than anyone else’s.

Holl is a big strong defenceman who can clear the front of the net fairly well. But he is also a good skater and a decent puck mover as well. Without a doubt everything TO has now is better than Mayfield. The Leafs do not need stay at home plugs who just stand in front of the net and block shots and cross check people. It has no value to their system.

I don't think all leaf players are better than all other players. I think guys doing a good job in the system our coach employs are better to hold onto than overpaying for people who aren't clear upgrades. The way the Islanders play is wildly different than how TO plays. A guy like Mayfield who is slow and substandard won't work well in a puck possession system. In Trotz's system, they dump and chase and then swarm the front of their own net. Mayfield never strays far from his own crease so his lack of skating and puck skills isn't exposed. They certainly would in TO.
