A Gambling Approach

Description
There's a little of risk-taking going on, but if it works it would make life on the Pens easier. Gambling on some youth as well.

Seattle has a lot of depth down the left side and likely still slow-rolling their push to be a playoff team. This gives them a a decent middle-six younger forward and a decent prospect to add to their depth. POJ can still be sent down once signed or flipped for futures.

The CHI trade is probably the one I expect to get pushback on, but with one year left for Zucker, a change of scenery may do him good and Pens get some solid depth.

BUF - This is a gamble. Okposo is still proving to be an effective player, but I honestly have zero clue what his value is in trade.

NYI - This is probably the least realistic out of these trades since it's within the division, but Varly gives the Pens what they need in a back-up capable of being a starting goalie for stints if Jarry gets injured. NYI get their LHD and one who probably fits like a glove in Trotz' system. I assume Isle fans will push back on the prospect, but hey, give me a counter-offer.

Isles probably reject. Varlamov hasn’t been the best but he still is alright so I’d remove the 4th rounder and maybe add on like a fifth to the isles side

Sorry, slightly confused. You're saying take the 4th out and have the Pens add a 5th?

LOL I still don't know what you mean by adding it to the Isles side. I'm not trying to be dense. You mean the Pens get a 5th instead of a 4th or the pens send a 5th instead of receiving a 4th?

I’m saying the Pens get Varlamov and Wilde and the Isles get Petterson and a fifth

Ok gotcha. I appreciate the feedback, but I have to respectfully disagree. If the Isles are sellers at the 22/23 deadline, depending on how Valry performed that year they probably can get at best a 2nd, but probably a 3rd (due to salary). I'd say right now Pettersson is worth a 3rd + solid prospect, maybe a 2nd depending on the team trading for him, so that's why I downgraded to a 4th + solid prospect, but I don't think the Pens need to add. If push came to shove, I'd just remove the pick.

I misread that. I though it was this deadline. I totally agree considering he’s probably going to regress further and be a pending UFA

Yeah, this is part of my gambling approach to all of this. I have no idea how Varly will age in another year, but he seems still capable of being at least average which is better than what the Pens currently have.

Chicago easily declines. We have no use to take on a $5.5M cap hit for one year for a 30 year player. Especially considered Stillman is locked in for 3 years at $1.35M as a 23 year old RFA who is exceeding everyone's expectations and should be a 2nd line mainstay, maybe even first liner, next season replacing Calvin De Haan.

As I said in the explanation, I expected this one to be the biggest pushback.

But you didn't explain why Chicago would want Zucker just the benefit to the pens or Zucker as a player so I added the Chicago point of view for clarity

I actually did. I said a change of scenery may be good for him. Zucker, if you do a bit of a deep dive into his advanced stats, has been playing excellent hockey this year. He's just snake-bit in the scoring department. A change of scenery or possibly playing with guys who might fit his style better may open up his scoring.

But why would Chicago want a 30 year old LW (which they have plenty of) for 1 year for a team that isn't competing over a 23 year old very impressive RFA on a 3 year deal? That's what you missed out on.

You're having trouble scoring goals and taking a gamble on a player who has a proven history of scoring and may benefit from a change of scenery isn't the most uncommon thing to do.

As a bottom 10 team, gaining a guy for scoring for 1 year whilst giving up a promising young D man on a favourable cap hit and term is not really in our best interests. Whilst I agree, Zucker would benefit from a change of scenery, I don't think we are that team. You will probably keep him until seasons end and make a deal similar to a Saad deal (Zadorov).

It is when you're working on building youth into the team and not close to competing. Youth = a 23 year old 3 year signed RFA that is a 2nd liner and potentially will develop into a 1st liner. A 30 year old with one year remaining who is having trouble scoring goals isn't going to help this team long term thus, why would the Hawks consider this? Makes zero sense

Sabres don't do that deal. Retention is too high for too little in return. At the beginning of the year, I think this deal would have worked, but with Okposo playing a lot better this year, the price has gone up I'm sure.

This is not a fraction of the risk but a real gamble as the choice is not quite obvious to this observation from the outside.
