imo the difference is that Stephenson was already moving in that direction but angled his skate so it would go towards the net. Matthews was not moving but kicked his skate forward towards the net

Im looking at Tierneys as honestly his goal is basically what Matthews did. Wish I could get an overhead camera view for Matthews but from the current angle so far almost identical goals. But Tierney's counted...

Tierneys was more of a redirect imo. If you look at the change in direction of the puck before and after it hits the skate the angle is >90 degrees, so the puck already had momentum in the forward direction towards the net and Tierney changed its direction without really adding any force behind it. On the Matthews one the angle is <90 degrees and the puck didnt have any momentum in the direction of the net until Matthews hit it that way

Definitely a grey area though and it couldve gone either way

See how on the Tierney one the puck already had momentum towards the net though? The puck only touched the side of his skate which was parallel to the direction that the puck went so Tierney could not have added any forward momentum towards the net with a kick

NHL should just make this the rule

You cannot deflect the puck into the net via foot motion. If the puck goes off a stand still foot it counts but if you do what these 2 did or Stephenson did it does not count

Will save people a lot of headaches and prevent controversy
