Trying to be rational

Équipe: 2021-22 Maple Leafs de Toronto

Description
I am of the small minority that think this lineup shouldn't be tampered with very much. This team is 3rd overall in GA/G, top 5 in scoring and has terrific special teams. They have a Vezina candidate goalie and a great mix of vets and young players. The only move I would consider is if they can somehow upgrade the 2nd pair. Muzzin certainly hasn't looked like himself this season which is worrisome at his age and I think that more than anything has made Holl look really bad. I think the right partner may help get Muzzin back on track. It very well could be a nagging injury or something as well. But that is the only issue I see for this team. Beyond that I think they are a contender and to deny that is just a bias against the team. Much worse teams are still considered contenders right now and only because the Leafs haven't won a playoff round in the Matthews era and people love that.

I would rather give up next year's 1st since we have more picks that year than this one but it doesn't matter much to me. I think this lineup would be nuts.

If you are asking Dallas to retain and take Ritchie I don’t see how you can’t give them a 1st now. Why would Dallas want that?

I agree that we don’t need to tamper very much.

I don’t agree that Klingberg is the play, though.

Klingberg isnt the guy you want to suplement Muzzin/holl at this point. He's basically a power play guy who is getting roughed up defensively pretty pretty bad and has been for a couple years. He's not worth the assets to the leafs.

Sorry that was a formality. I read on Sportsnet that TO actually has more cap space than it appears on here due to accrued space. With Ritchie gone they have roughly 4 million in space for the remainder of the season. So they could do this without retaining but it won't show properly so I retained. Disregard the retention.

I think he fits like a glove in the system, I also am a firm believer that "defensive defenceman" aren't a real thing anymore. You need guys who can get the puck and get it the other way. Klingberg is sick in transition, he just plays in a system that doesn't do that. I think with Muzzin as his partner and Keefe's system he would be terrific.

I think that has a lot more to do with the system he plays in Dallas than anything else. The system he is in nullifies a lot of his skillset while in TO it would cater more to his skills.

maybe, maybe not. but when a guy who is in the decline window and have played heavy heavy minutes for like a decade it's just as likely to be a physical break down. And that's before you factor in things like him being fed massive offensive zone starts for years too.

That’s a pretty good read on the actual Klingberg situation. I would only add that he is a true beast in the playoffs and a clutch player.

I did a post similar yo this a few days ago but had Holl instead of Ritchie. Ritchie is a really cheap buyout next year (300k) and Toronto likely has to move on from one of Holl/Dermott.

My trade had Raffl added as well but after discussion I think Kiviranta makes it fair

Holl/Dermott + 1st + Robertson for Klingberg (50%) + Kiviranta.

I also think Klingberg would be an excellent fit in a possession based team. And I dont think it would be like Barrie was as Klingberg is a more reliable puck mover and is excellent in the playoffs

Barrie and Klingberg are not the same player. Also Toronto's other top 4 guy then was Cody Ceci, you have Brodie now who is leagues better

Here's my post if you want to read it, IMO I consider adding Klingberg similar to how Tampa went and signed Shattenkirk even though they had Hedman, Mcdonagh and Sergachev

Klingberg is still young and definitely not declining. I think just misused in a bad system. I think he would be far better in TO.

I am sorry, am I missing a trade for Barrie here? We all know you don't like anyone with skill. Just cement heads who hit and can't skate.

He's gonna be 6 months away from 30 by the time the deadline rolls around and he has 100% been declining for a few years now and is basically a power play quarterback at this point. He might be better, but he's got a bigger chance of being older, slower more expensive tyson barrie

yes, with Barrie. And Klingberg has potential to be very similar in toronto because of what he is at this stage in his career. 29 year olds who look like they are declining usually dont bounce back to be elite players. He's been pretty brutal defensivly for a while and basically scoring half their points on the power play now. He's got all the signs of being a complimentary piece and not one you trade a ton for to play big mins in your top 4

I think he'd be a great one year pickup. I wouldn't resign him unless it was an insane bargain.

I think this is the most complete team I have seen in the past many years. I'm okay with punting a 1st for a major pickup. I am also not that high on Robertson.
