well 7 mill is not reasonable.

I think you will see a 4-5 deal around 4-5 mill something like garlands contract.

Love JP and clearly he's a fan favourite, I just don't think the consistency is there to see something over $6M AAV with term. He had a hot start but has hit a rough patch (along with the rest of the team). I can also see he has the potential to be an offensive driver, but as of right now he is benefiting from playing with 97.

As a fan, I'd like to think a long term deal at like $4.5M-5M for like 6-7 years. Over $30M for a guy who was out of the league 2 years ago is not a bad turn around at all.

If JP wants to "bet on himself" a little, maybe a 3-4 year deal is the way to do it.

Either way, how Holland deals with this will be pretty interesting

Id be ok seeing an 8 year deal in the range of 6 maybe a bit more even. Personally I love jp the way he plays his attitude everything about him I want in that locker room long term if that means paying a bit more right now than he’s earned so be it very confident he will continue grow and be worth every penny

I'm all for keeping Jesse around for the rest of the decade, but at some point the Oilers have GOT to stop paying people for the McDavid bump. $6M+ is legitimate for a 25-goal, 60-point player, but honestly how much of that production is due to playing with McDavid? That has to be factored in.

Honestly thats all they can afford anyway. Unless they move out some money, which I dont think Holland is creative enough to do.

I only came up with 7 because members of the media seem to be running with that.

I would go upto 6 Million x 8. I'd love to get him on the nuge contract but don't forget they did a 2 year bridge and the organization ****ed him up royally at the start. a bet on himself contract walks JP to free agency and also puts him in there at a time where they will try to resign Draisaitl followed by Mcdavid.

He hasn't scored 60+ points yet. The season is long and the scoring on the team has already decreased significantly. I highly doubt he reaches 60 this year. He may even settle in just under 50 by seasons end at his current pace the past 20 or so games. Also he plays with of the two best point producers in the league. He is benefitting heavily from those two. Not to say he would suck without them but his numbers would be way less playing next to just about anyone else.

His contract should be in the 4-5 year range at around 4-5M. Not including the CDN tax. Locks him up long term so if he explodes, EDM gets him at his prime and gives Puljujarvi decent security considering he hasn't done anything spectacular yet. If he explodes, he'll be a free agent at 28-29 ripe for a big next contract and for EDM is right before a player starts to eventually decline per historical data.

So I think approx. 5M x 5 years would make him happy, would be right in line with his production thus far AND projected production going forward. I think EDM could also bridge him if they are not certain he'll be that 60+ point guy. If they trust he will be, than longer the better but I think giving him 8 years is completely unfounded at this point. Even if it brings down the AAV a bit overall. There is more chance he isn't the big name scorer he was expected to be then he is IMO. With that said, a 40-50 pt scoring 6'3 winger isn't anything to sneeze at either. Hence the 4-5 years IMO.

Jim Matheson I think had an NHL equivalency calculator and it said 7.6 million.

You do the long term team friendly contract with puljujarvi 7-8 years. 4-5 years takes him to his prime and makes you have to bid on him in free agency. it is very likely you lose him after that contract because draisaitl alone is scheduled for about a 2.5-3.5 million raise in 4 years. As long as edmonton is winning they will not find another player like him.

Statistically speaking, a players "prime" is 24-29. JP turns 24 in May I think. So 8 years takes him to 32 years old. IMHO, he hasn't shown enough to prove he will be worth his high cap for all 8 years of that contract. I say sign him throughout the best years of his like statistically speaking and if he is amazing throughout, and you lose him to FA, so be it. The odds are his numbers would drop in that new contract anyway so no biggie.

Just my 2 cents though.
