Description
I know this seems crazy but lets break it down.
Hertl and Taveras have similar numbers
Tavares 32GP 14G 20A 34P
Hertl 36GP 20G 11A 31P
the biggest difference is Hertl is playing with guys who would be on 90% of hockey teams 3rd or 4th lines (Barabanov, Gregor, Balcers, Nieto etc.) where Taveras has legit top 6 line-mates.
Hertl is a better goal scorer, 3 years younger, and is 4.35 mill cheaper allowing Toronto to get a 2C with almost zero drop-off play wise, and who also is a proven playoff performer.
what should seal the deal is TOR then has 4 mil lore in the cap to go after another piece (D help or another winger)
Sharks finally get Taveras who they have wanted for a long time and were heartbroken they missed out on in 2018 FA
Hertl wants to win now and TOR is stacked so it should be a want for him to play there, and we were Tavares 2nd choice so it's not a reach for him to be ok with coming here.
Does Toronto consider this?
would the sharks?
will the players agree?

I like as a Leaf to get 11m cap space next summer. For the same reason Sharks shouldn't consider it. But 99% sure Tavares doesn't waive for the trade.

2 1sts and a 2nd dude you think way to high of him.
this is what he was dealt for from LA to Vancouver 2 years ago.

Tim Schaller · $1,900,000
Tyler Madden · $0 (AHL/JR) (Signing Rights)
2020 2nd round pick (VAN - #51 - Theodor Niederbach)
2022 4th round pick (VAN) [Conditional]*

Tyler madden is looking OK and Tim Schaller wasn't even resigned
so in essence a 3rd round prospect a 2nd and a 4th.
I'm offering a former 1st a 3rd and a 1st because he is signed longer term.

he did seriously consider signing with us before TOR so it wouldn't be too crazy.

at first glance its insane, look deeper in and they are both top quality C and Hertl numbers would be way better on a team with depth like TOR plus then you have more money to pick up another piece.
it's not insane but it is probably 99% likely to never happen I agree.
this isn't serious just an idea.

Apparently he took less money to be a Leaf. He's has "old time Italian family values." Just don't see him moving away from parents and others in his circle which is the Toronto area.
But the other thing for the any team that has Tavares.....in a cap strapped league, 11m is too much , San Jose would be much better off, selling Hertl for young assets and then have lots of cap this summer.

I agree. and we could probably get a 1st 2nd and top prospect with how good his play has been, plus we can retain on him and make it more tempting for a playoff team.
still were closer to competitive than people think.
If we resign Hert we wil be better off than if we trade him, but we still need 2-3 more legit top 9 forwards. they get 2 with Eklund and Bordeleau next year, and if they add a top 6 RHS RW in the offseason and buy out Vlasic were in good position to surprise people next season.

I’d probably accept the deal above. Although your saying 2 firsts but ozzy was the last pick of the first round and isn’t doing the best this year. You could easily make the argument that ozzy is valued at a 2 rounder. So a first 2 and 3 is the trade, which is think is pretty fair for toffoli

I'd accept that Toffoli trade in a heartbeat. What makes it "In a heartbeat" for me essentially is my lack of faith the Sharks would make the playoffs so the pick would probably be mid 1st round. IMHO SJ has no business trading 1sts away right now so I don't think this trade would happen anyway.

As for the Leafs trade, I don't think Tavares would waive to go to SJ at this point after signing with the Leafs finally. He'd be going to a worse situation and moving away from the team he chose as his preference originally.

He is playing better than his numbers reflect. he is on the worst team in the WHL carrying the team on his back. he is better than his numbers.
I would expect him to excel on a solid AHL team next year and be NHL ready in 2 years. he will be a middle 6/ 3rd line player and in his prime be a pesky 10-15 goal scorer and solid defensive forward. he is like a Goodrow Clone IMO.

were a playoff fringe team now (sitting in the last playoff spot as of tonight) and now we have 7 MIL extra to add players next year, and this is also worth the addition of Ryan Merkley on the D, Knyzhov back healthy back on the D and Bordeleau and Eklund who will be in the NHL next year on ELC. add 1-2 more solid middle 6 guys and we then have a competitive team, especially with a guy like Tofolli.

Maybe. Maybe not. These are the bets GM's make against each other when they trade. You wouldn't make this trade if you didn't believe what you believe. Also based on points percentage because SJ has played more games than all their competitors, they're actually 12th in the conference.... Either way If I were the Habs GM, I would make that trade with you.

Madden is a 2nd round prospect. Toffoli when he was traded to Vancouver was on his last year of his contract. Now he has 2 and a half years left with a great contract. He had a 44 goal pace last year therefore the return should absolutely be at least double than last time. Madden×2= 1st round level prospect. 2nd round pick ×2= 1st round pick. Since he has looked better he could add a 2nd.

we are in a playoff spot as we stand right now, with extra cap space from Kane’s termination combined with Eklund and Bordeleau who will most likely make the team and we have the makings of playoff competitor.

he’s not on a 44 goal pace more like a 20 goal pace which is more aligned with his skill level. he is not a 2 1st guy, and if you think that then you can keep him.

ok take 15/16 and last year out of his history and he’s a high teens goal scorer. can he score 30? yes. will he? possibly… but odds are he scores 15-24 in a full season. still a great player but not a 2 1sts plus guy.
