That's interesting, could've saved them trading for an injured Ryan Ellis, maybe they'd already be contenders again. Plus, imagine Provorov and Makar on the same pair!

If Makar played in the WHL and not the AJHL A LOT more scouts would have paid A LOT more attention to him

Why is Hextall even a GM again?

True. Why did the Pens hired the the incompetent hockey man Brian Burke as team president. Burke's a good TV personality .

Curious to hear from others in Philly, because I don't recall a moment in history where Bobby Clarke hasn't pointed the finger at someone else...

Only reason I say this, is because they had Sanheim, Myers, Hagg and Morin as their top D prospects at the time, with fringier (fringy?) guys like Lindblom, Rubstov, Frost and Ratcliff as their top forward prospects...I can certainly see logic in taking the *best* forward available, which (at the time) was Patrick.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, and Makar is a f*ckin' beast, but at the time, those 4 D men that the Flyers already had (Plus Ghost...65 pts as a 24 year old(!!!) and Provorov), were pretty highly regarded.

I get Hextall was a solid goalie in the 80s and 90s so why didn’t he become a goaltending coach?

If Makar was gone at 4, perhaps the Avs would have tried to trade down? I don't see any other defensemen in the top 10, but I don't know how Sakic feels about trading during the draft as I haven't really paid attention to the Avalanche during draft time.

Well Hextall was supposed to the next GM whiz kid after being assistant GM for the Kings. Funny, so many NHL head coaches are fired, then get recycled as head coaches for other team.
