Off-Season Trade With Oilers

Description
Oilers are looking for a goalie and depth scoring. Leafs are looking to move cap space to sign Campbell. Seems like a win-win to me.

Justification: Kerfoot is on a 55 point pace, can fill in center when there's injuries, and is good value at 3.5. Mrazek (while dicey with injuries, yes) has almost 300 games, has been a starter before, and is a career .910 and signed to term. Dermott is a good bottom pairing D who can move the puck.

Value:
1st: Kerfoot (UFA)
2nd: Mrazek (with 2 years left)
4th: Dermott (RFA)

Derek Ryan: Cap going the other way + veteran depth.

I'm thinking it's going to be one of Dermott or Holl traded in the off-season, but the Oilers have their RD planned out so it didn't really make sense to send Holl in this case. I thought they might try to move Keith to make more room for Yamamoto, Puljujarvi, and LD.

Expecting the Oilers to be a much better team next year, a first would be closer to a second in value.

I put Campbell in the high end of UFA signings that I've seen to try and put the roster in a 'worse case scenario' type contract negotiation. Also left Richie in the lineup just in case there's nothing done with him in the off-season or he bounces back. Kase I based on his RFA status, injury history, and friendship with Kampf. Let me know if there's something I hadn't considered!

Kerfoot is not worth a mid-1st. Mrazek is not worth a 2nd. He's constantly injured and his contract is not looking good, so Leafs won't get something of value back if they trade him.

I don’t mind the idea of Kerfoot, but aside from Kerfoot, that package does not address Oilers needs. And it certainly isn’t worth a 1st and 2nd

Oilers need a starter to pair with Skinner. A Mrazek-Skinner combo doesn’t exactly instil any more confidence than the smith-Koskinen duo. Not to mention Mrazek has multiple years left.

I can see how moving Mrazek helps the Leafs, but not the goalie the Oilers should be targeting

Every Oiler fan is against getting a good player from TO. They would rather wait till they are FA's and then massively overpay them. So zero Oiler fans will pay anything for Kerfoot because it's smarter to be terrible and then crush your long term caphit by paying Kerfoot 5+ million when he's FA.

That's an awfully bold statement. Smith and Koskinen are barely showing themselves as NHL calibre players. Smith sometimes looks good but Koskinen is trash. Mrazek got hurt this season and soon enough will get some game action and likely play well. TO is a good defensive team and he'll be good playing for them.

Look.. Kerfoot is a good player, but I don't think any team is giving a 1st for him. Same with Mrazek. A 2nd is way too much.

Its not a bold statement at all. Mrazek hasn't been healthy for a while. I like Mrazek, but I don't think many teams are too optimistic about him right now. He needs to show he can stay healthy and put some quality starts together this year.

What’s bold about what I said?

- Smith was great for the Oilers last year. Koskinen was a serviceable backup. All Oilers fans were very disappointed when we went back to that duo after failing to upgrade. We knew Koskinen was not consistent enough to be a starter and Smith was 38, already playing in borrowed time. Thus, we didn’t have confidence in this duo and after a hot start, the unreliability is showing.

- Skinner is promising, but he’s played like 5 games. He is best served as a backup role.

- mrazek:
- often injured
- signed for 2 more years
- “likely to play well” doesn’t mean a thing haha
- also saying that Mrazek is going to play well behind a good defensive team is just another reason why the Oilers should stay clear. We are far from a strong defensive team.

Again I ask, what was so bold? An often injured 1B/backup and a rookie is not a duo that instills confidence. Just like a Smith/Koskinen duo. WE WANT AN UPGRADE. Mrazek is just more of the same

And as everyone else already mentioned, you’re out of your mind if you think that package of players Toronto wants to get rid of is getting you a 1st and 2nd.

Kerfoot for a 3rd+prospect or just a 2nd? Oilers should/would have interest. The rest of that mediocre package does nothing for the Oilers

I don't mean to be argumentative or as knowledgeable as you about the Oiler's situation- I just want that to be clear. I just like talking about hockey.

My reasoning for Mrazek was that he would be the most cost-effective starter available in the off-season. The fact that he has multiple years remaining on his deal was part of the reason why he was worth a 2nd - the extra two years is a valuable asset (especially considering starting goalie prices).

Out of the UFA's available (or, not having to give up any valuable assets for an RFA), there are none that are under 30, have over 200 games played, and above .900 save %. I'm sure the Oilers could roll the dice with Forsberg, Korpisalo, Wedgewood, or DeSmith, but Mrazek is better than those listed. I'm sure I don't know every player available, but those seem like some of the more likely candidates I could think of.

The 'players Toronto wants to get rid of' seems to imply there's a reduction in value or that Toronto has to pay to adjust cap strategies, but the players listed (apart from Dermott, who's solidly OK), are... good players. There's a difference between a cap dump and a good player traded for cap reasons lol.

With Smith and an non-waived NMC Keith as an extra man, the Oilers have 11.1 million (or 13.3 without Smith) to re-sign Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, McLeod, Benson, a 3C, some depth (optionalish), a second pairing LD, a starter and maybe a backup. Perhaps a Keith buyout, a Kassian trade, and a Smith trade could help, but a re-tool focused on dealing futures seems inevitable regardless of which team (no matter how hated) they trade with.

Coleman and Goodrow got better returns than that. So did Foligno and Kerfoot is as good if not better than those guys. Doing better than all of them this season.

Lol, just hearing what you want to hear I guess. Bunting has done just as good as Hyman did playing with Marner and Matthews. And costs 4 million less. Kerfoot is going as good as Hyman is this year and costs less. Paying Hyman that much was a mistake and I am happy it wasn't Dubas's mistake.

Mrazek is constantly injured to the point where it actually hurts to see him play nowadays

I just don’t see how he gets much playing time in Edmonton when they can sign goalies in free agency that are better

Also that trade sucks no one is trading a first rounder for a third line winger, an injury prone backup and a fringe bottom pairing dman

Blah blah blah. Almost every ACGM from a Leaf fan includes Kerfoot and everyone talks about how good he is and he is so important to Leafs. He is a 3rd line center and nothing more. He is a decent player. But he is not getting Leafs anyrhing more than a 3rd. I do not u understand Leaf fans thinking they are getting a 1st for Kerfoot. Be realistic he is a 3rs line player and he is not a 2nd line guy.

You do remember that Dubas offered the same amount of money to Hyman but he just wouldn't go the extra year right? So if you're trying to argue that Toronto didn't think Hyman was worth that much then you're just wrong. They just didn't want the longer commitment given Hyman's style of play and that he'll likely deteriorate because of it. Lol.

The number of players he's exceeding this year who are considered so much more than a "3rd line centre and nothing more" but this is where we are. How long did your crowd argue Nylander is only a 60 point winger? Typical BS logic. Hyman is now a top end top 6 LW who is performing below Kerfoot's level and I guarantee last season you called him just a 3rd line winger who's getting points due to Matthews.

That is completely bull****. The rumour was he offered him 5 million for way less term but then when he signed said there never was enough money for him. Dubas new Hyman was gone he knew giving that much money and term to a player like Hyman was a bad idea. Edmonton will prove that without a shadow of a doubt. It's already been proven.

Lol.

Kerfoot's producing at a 0.73 PPG pace (on pace for 60 points), can play all 3 forward positions anywhere in your top 9, brings a very good forechecking game with tons of speed, kills penalties, and is signed not only for the rest of this season but also next season at a cap hit of $3.5M and doesn't even make that much in real cash.. but you only think Toronto could only get a 3rd round pick for him? Yikes. You couldn't be more wrong in all likelihood.

Barclay Goodrow was and is nothing more than a good 4th line forward and he even returned a 1st round pick. Kerfoot at the very least would likely be valued around a 2nd round pick and a prospect/young roster player with how he's been performing.

Stop the Leafs hate and just see the player for what he is. Geez.
