Quoting: CMcAvoy73
Not a lot of wrong? I think he’s one of, if not the worst GM in the league.
We all know the draft history. Terrible. And apparently he had to be talked into taking mcavoy.
Then you have trading reilly smith for jimmy hayes, and then buying out jimmy hayes
Signing belesky
Signing backes
Having to pay to get rid of both those guys
That horrid Nash trade.
That weird deadline where he gave up a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and a prospect to get lee stempniak and john-Michael liles.
Trading for ritchie
Trading for Kase.
The abomination of an off-season he just had.
Signing John Moore.
Refusing to trade any of his good prospects, while making sure they’re totally blocked by signing mediocre NHL vets.
It’s outrageous that he still has a job. The only thing hes ever been good at is extending his own players.
90% of this list happened 2018 or before. during that period they should have tanked. and reset. his draft history isnt great, and honestly i wasnt a huge mcavoy fan at that time either, personally wanted bean/chychrun in that draft. the frederic pick was bad, and still is bad, 2017 draft vaak was trending reallly really well until he suffered that major concussion, hasnt been the same player since. not really sweeneys fault, sometimes injuries like that happen. studnicka, kids young i thought this was the perfect year to give him a chance, but ide bet you jacobs said its playoffs or bust. swayman was a 4th rounder that year... 2018 draft: axel andersson (book still out on him, dont think hes anything special), lauko (like the player potential middle 6er) 2019 beecher (still have no idea what this kid will be.. likely bottom 6er unfortunately but hes got a unique talent set for sure.) (i wanted hoglander or vlasic fwiw), jake schmaltz is a sneaky okay pick in the 7th round. 2020 draft lohrei was a head scratcher but i love him. think hes got a great nhl career ahead of him, kuntar is a decent prospect in the system for a mid rounder, 2021 lysell should have gone top 10, harrison might end up as a 2c hes doing that well in juniors right now, projects that way currently, he drafted carlo and lauzon, debrusk was looking great until covid and they taylor hall. Zboril was starting to find his place in the nhl this year.
Trades:
he hasnt really won many, hall was the only notable win, but at the same time you cant continually trade 1sts (theyve traded 2 in 6 years of him drafting) and expect him to have quality prospects either. imagine if he had pulled the trigger on a vaak+++ for OEL deal last year like rumored? woof. kase move was fine, the analytics on him were and still are great, he just couldnt stay healthy here which was what happened in anaheim. you gave up a 1st because you signed backes (probably jacobs fault) too long. belesky was a weird signing but he was another one of those guys that had a career year and got paid for it. then got hurt and couldnt rebound. i dont think he was the right fit in our scheme. Dont forget first couple years was with Claude, and next couple were with bruce. theyve had winning teams, theyve made playoffs continually.
Signings:
you can question alot of his overpays for sure, moore was dumbfounding... but maybe the analytics said something we didnt see at the time, i dont think he had a bad offseason by any means this past year. foligno was a weird signing, but i liked the haula/nosek signings, there really wasnt a 2c available, and you have to also give coyle a chance there to see if he works.
dont really know what you expect given where they were picking and scouting/team needs at the time. hindsight is always 20/20. dont forget almost every scout had zboril higher than chabot. senyshyn was the only reach there.
