Description
I'm fully aware I'll take flak for this, but I want to try a different trade idea.

I'd say Fiala's value is at around 1st and a 2nd. Marat K is around a late 1st. Hertl is worth two 1st and Barabanov is at around two 2nds. Minnesota moves Fiala for a cheaper replacement and a 1C. Hertl and Barabanov work well together and could both be resigned; Hertl at round 7.5~8mil for 6-7 years, while Barabanov could look to take a shorter deal at around 3mil for 3 years. They could be played with Kaprizov and give them a scary top line with a 1-2 punch of Hertl and JEK. Sharks get a younger winger to play with Meier and form a Swiss duo of sorts. They also bring in another highly rated C prospect that fills an organizational need. I put Scott Reedy between the two Swiss wingers because he's shown he has a scoring touch in the AHL and given the chance to play between two talented wingers, he has every reason to flourish.

I think you've overpriced Hertl here, but I don't hate the general idea. In fact, I almost wonder if Hertl for Fiala 1-for would work. Value balances out thanks to RFA vs UFA status and whatnot, plus Fiala is a major bounce back candidate.

Sharks don’t consider Hertl for fiala 1 for 1

I actually think you'd come out on top of that trade in the long run. Besides he is a UFA rental, you aren't getting nearly as much value as you want

Although I see where you’re coming from, I don’t think Fiala is worth the same value as Hertl. Hertl is far more skilled and drives play way more. He plays a position that’s valued much more and can be much more versatile, be it taking faceoffs or playing a 200ft game.

Edit: Also a trade like this would give Minnesota the space to resign Hertl.

Short term, absolutely correct. Hertl is better and Fiala is in a rut. If they were both under control for (say) 3 years there is no way in hell. The problem is that MIN is getting 3 months from Hertl, vs the full control and expected bounce back of Fiala. That value skews in your direction big time long term, and that is with my 1-for trade, let alone yours.

And if he doesn't want to stay? Trading a guy without control, even if they could theoretically extend their control over him doesn't garner additional value. Moreover you seem to not fully understand the predicament the Wild are in cap wise. Due to adding $8M onto the cap next year from the buyouts they can't even afford Fiala as is, so no this move does not give them the space to extend Hertl's contract at $8M ish aav

I think you're overvaluing both of the Sharks players as they are UFAs with no quarantee of staying after the season. Taylor Hall was traded for a single 2nd, so especially Barabanov's valuation seems off.

I'd maybe just drop the 2nd and 5th the Wild are giving and call it a day.

You can’t use Taylor Hall here because he wanted to go to Boston and that was it and Boston knew that.

Kevin Hayes got a 1st nhler and a 4th with never scoring 50 points like 3 years ago. Sharks will get much more for Hertl

Um, for the record. No, he is not. Hertl is more skilled, that is true, and he does play the more important position. But Fiala is absolutely the better playdriver. Fiala has been a top 5 puck possession player in the league for the last 3 years. Including this year, but he just can't buy a goal right now. The fact he carries one of the worst xG's in the league is proof that it'll turn around. Besides, he's always been a second half of the season kind of player, always has been.

And as a fan of both teams and players. You're overvaluing Hertl, he's not getting that type of return back given his status as a UFA at the end of the year. And Minnesota can't resign him unless he plays for the same amount as he's making now. Which isn't gonna happen. It's not worth it.

Gustav Nyquist and Mats Zuccarello were both traded for a 2nd and a 3rd round picks. They were on pace to hit 64 and 65 points respectively. Barabanov is on pace to score 52. He isn't worth two 2nd rounders and that's that.

I was using that trade more along the lines for Hertl. I don’t think Barabanov is worth two seconds either. If they do trade him he should go for a 2nd though with his production at $1 mil aav.

What's the point in a rental if you give up a key oeice who can stick around (not terribly far off of Hertl as an asset either) if you also giving up nearly enough to get the deal done in futures anyways?

I love Hertl but that's an overpay and it doesn't even make sense from a contending standpoint either
