@mikearky should have made in more clear in my NYI post that Vegas would still have needed to trade another piece (used Dadonov here as the example). But the team fits and the cap space isn't as razor thin as it seems. They have space to add players if they trade out Smith/Dadonov to allow for Eichel's return

Why is Vegas trading a 2nd in the Isles/Rangers trade?

Why is Vegas trading a 2nd in the Isles/Rangers trade?

Here is the trade broken down a little more clearly

NYI in: 2022 2nd (VGK), 2022 4th (NYR), $2.5m retention on expiring Smith contract.
      NYI out: Parise, Greene

VGK in: Parise, Greene, 2022 2nd (STL)
VGK out: 2022 2nd (VGK), Smith

      NYR in: Smith (50% retained)
      NYR out: 2022 2nd (STL), 2022 4th (NYR)

Basically, Vegas paid a 2nd round pick to acquire Greene, Parise and brokering NYI as the middle man to retain $2.5m on Smith. Then, they get a 2nd round pick back from NYR in return for Smith in the first place. Kind of a wash to them. Just adding better depth while having to move money out to accommodate Eichel/Martinez returning from LTIR

Don't the Rangers have the cap space to take on Smith's full cap hit though?

I think Vegas finds another way to fit everyone without trading Smith.

I'm not fully versed in all the LTIR rules but since Eichel has been on LTIR don they just need enough space to fit his remaining cap hit for the season when he returns?

LTIR goes above my pay grade tbh. I'm just going off cap on the ACGM when I pull them off. Rangers point is valid about the cap space but I guess in theory half retained lets them add even more if they wanted to. I think Smith is a goner personally. We'll find out in a couple months
