if I was Gm of the Habs

Description
playoff bubble 2020 - Habs sold at deadline, and lost to pens in qualifiers, giving them 8th overall pick.

2021 season - habs never went to finals, or made playoffs, they get 10th overall selection.

2022 - who knows where this team would be ranked right now, probably higher than the current roster.

this is how the team would look currently after drafting namec in the top 5 this offseason.

the 5th and 6th forward lines is the teams top prospects.

LTIR are players who I wouldve never signed / picked up.

ben chariot traded at this years deadline for first.

i think the biggest thing for the habs is not signing all those big long contracts. they are going to handicap the habs for years.

You want to erase a finals run to miss the playoffs. That is some galaxy brain fandom, my dude.

Some of these moves make sense.

Two things I wanted to point out, Edmonton valued Puljujarvi at around a mid 1st. Not sure that the oilers would have been willing to swap what essentially was two mid round 1sts for Danault and Tatar. I certainly wouldn’t have.

The other thing is that if the 2020 and 2021 playoff runs don’t happen then in all likelihood you don’t get the same returns that you would have otherwise on player like Petry and Danault.

    Interesting AGM tho

im not trying to erase the memorable playoff run, im happy that happened.

this post is what wouldve happened with me as GM. I was crying for a huge rebuild / firesale at the 2020 deadline. These are the moves I wouldve made.

No finals run, but the team is set up for success for the next decade.

Assuming this all went down, what would be stopping KK from be offer sheeted by the Canes or any other team? I’m sure there a few offer sheets filed every year, but it only rarely happens that someone will sign an offer sheet. I am quite sure that there was at least one team that offer sheeted a player last year, except the player didn’t sign the OS. The only player that signed one was KK. A player is under no obligations to sign an OS, and they decide what they want to do with it. KK might not have been offer sheeted in this timeline, but who gets offer sheeted instead?

the reason why the OS wouldn't of happened is because he wouldve signed a normal contract with MTL (3x3 for example) instead of actively looking to leave Montreal. He was shafted from day 1 in Montreal and the healthy scratching in MTL in the playoffs was the final straw for him.

His agent even said when he was scratched in the finals that he said "he played his last game for the Montreal Canadians."

Well, it could have been worse. He didn’t pull a Patrick Roy move before he left. Joking aside, I get what you are saying, but even if he didn’t want to actively leave Montreal, what was stopping a team from offer sheeting KK before he signs that contract with the Habs? There is nothing stopping a team from offer sheeting a player, except for the player themselves. The player has the choice to sign it or not.

Even if this all happens, KK is not guaranteed to not be able to offer sheeted. Nobody as a pending RFA is guaranteed not to be offer sheeted. That is just the nature of the beast.

agreed, however I still wanted to match the offer anyways. so doesn't really matter.

I swear the Habs have to have the most miserable fanbase. They literally JUST went to the Cup Finals and multiple Habs fans have posted how they'd be better off doing a bunch of different moves that would erase that run to the Cup Finals. As the fan of a team that hasn't been past the 2nd round in over a decade, I'd love to see them go to the Cup Finals even if they lose. A long playoff run is a blast to watch!

this is what wouldve happened if I was GM. Realistic moves I WANTED to make at the time.

The finals run was amazing and wouldn't of happened if I was GM.
