First line will get most of the offensive starts. Suzuki and Caufield are defensively responsible, so if something goes horribly wrong then they'll both get back (and hopefully the defenders will too).
Second line will get a good amount of offensive starts, but not very many defensive ones. Dvorak is defensively responsible, but Hoffman and Anderson not so much. Preferably the 2nd d-pair plays with them.
Third line consists of two players who can PK, plus one who played on one of the best lines in the NHL. Lots of defensive starts, but some offensive ones too since they can all produce offense.
Fourth line is the best of the rest. They're a 100% shutdown line who will be on when it's a 6v5, but other than that, they'll usually split up and play with the other FWD lines.

What can be said about the D-pairs? They play defense? And the goalies are good at goalie...

PP1:

Drouin
Hoffman - Caufield - Suzuki
Petry

Drouin won't really do much at the front of the net... consider him the guy who goes behind the net to get the puck and set up a play from there. Almost like a reverse QB.
Hoffman will get one timers from where he is, Caufield and Suzuki will snipe pucks at the net and hopefully get some goals.
Petry will get one timers, otherwise he'll set things up as the actual QB and take slapshots.

PP2:

Gallagher
Toffoli - Dvorak - Anderson
Romanov

Gallagher will be Gallagher in front of the net. Screening the goalie, annoying the heck out of the defensemen.
Toffoli and Anderson will take all the shots they can. Dvorak and Romanov will be the ones that set them up.
Romanov plays as a traditional QB, but when a player on the opposing team is trying to get it out and is stuck, he switches places with Dvorak, lands a big hit, and then goes back.

Poehling, Byron, and Clague also get a little bit of PP time if the team is comfortably ahead.

4 man PP1:

Drouin
Caufield - Suzuki
Petry

4 man PP2:

Hoffman
Dvorak - Toffoli
Romanov

PK1:

Dvorak - Lehkonen
Edmundson - Petry

PK2:

Evans - Suzuki
Romanov - Savard

3 man PK1:

Dvorak
Edmundson - Petry

3 man PK2:

Evans
Romanov - Savard

4v4:

Suzuki - Toffoli
Edmundson - Petry

Dvorak - Caufield
Romanov - Savard

Hoffman - Poehling
Clague - Wideman

[ONLY TO BE USED IF NOTHING MEANS ANYTHING]

Toffoli - Suzuki
Hoffman - Caufield

3v3:

Suzuki - Caufield
Romanov

Drouin - Dvorak
Petry

Toffoli - Poehling
Edmundson

6v5:

Drouin
Caufield - Suzuki - Toffoli
Edmundson - Petry

Gallagher
Hoffman - Dvorak - Anderson
Romanov - Wideman

I love the detail and you’d assume each assumption you made about the lines and what function they should have with the roster but the uncomfortable truth for eve the Habs fan to face is: this team isn’t good.

I’m a die hard, so my memory is pretty good; most of the current problems the team is encountering are a symptom of the greater issues that have been looming since 2018-19, and even some issues that have been around since 2011.

1. Habs without Price isn’t even in the conversation of playoff contention

2. Habs continue to have a severe lack of proven offensive talent

3. Zero urgency to improve the team

Season after off season after playoff berth after cup run, it’s the same ****. There was no ‘rebuild’, it was “let’s see how many guys we can tell to play two way hockey in order to shelter price and just get carried as far aa Carey can take us” Bergevin failed miserably, and should have been fired years ago, but the Cinderella run halted that movement - putting the team in the current rut they are in now.

I say blow it up and get as many early picks as physically possible, get a real coaching staff that wasn’t hired solely off the fact that they are French; and rebuild like NYR or DET.

honestly the team is good on paper. 2nd liners or better on the wings, model right side... but this team got incredibly lucky last season
maybe not a rebuild, but a retool would be a good idea

There was more effort put into this post than effort MTL displays on the ice most games.

Always nice to read someone's breakdown / analysis of a roster. I'd say it's all pretty good but I have to say calling Caufield defensively responsible is questionable I think.

What I would say is that the Habs are extremely flawed a certain positions that it diminishes how good other positions can be. At forward both RW and LW are solid imo on all lines. I would try and avoid touching (trading) any of them. The Center position is killing the Habs right now. It hurts to say, but the loss of Danault is what's killing the Habs at the forward position. He took all the hard matchups and ate all the ****ty minutes nobody wants to play. It leaves Suzuki exposed, Dvorak should be at most (from what we've seen) a 3rd line C. MTL desperately need a two-way top 6 C, and Dvorak isn't it. Poehling and Evans are both good if they were rotating 3rd, 4th line roles, but with how underwhelming Dvorak has been, they are all stuck playing over their station.

On D, the left side is fine. I can live with what's there and be patient with all the LD prospects coming up in the next year or two. At RD.....needs a complete overhaul... Petry has been god awful (injury or no), Savard shouldn't be playing more than 13ish minutes a night on the 3rd pair and PK, and there's no one to fill out a top 4 role.

At G, I honestly put no blame on Allen, he hasn't been stellar (he isn't paid to be), but his numbers don't reflect how little help he is getting.

The team has also given up the the coaching staff imo. Sucks but i think it's the truth. it looks like Ducharme really did get lucky in the playoffs with Price playing like his old self. Ducharme can't fix the sinking ship, and hearing the comments Petry has been making since the beginning of the season, no one is buying into his system.

I would try and avoid a rebuild, just fix the damn C and RD positions and see what comes of it... and get a new coach. I wouldn't be upset though if a rebuild would be the route Gorton chooses however.

Don't put Petry with Caufield on the PP, Petry never passes to him.
