Isles fans blow a gasket whenever Varly doesn't go for a first +
Here's the thing - maybe four teams can take him on without retention. Of those four teams, this is the only one that likely is after a winning record starting next year. Teams like Edmonton will almost certainly demand retention or send back cap, which defeats the purpose of the move for the Isles. So while I agree he can get a first with 1.5m or so retention, he can't at full cap.

The Nashville trade is horrible for Isles. Fabbro and Tolvanen are not particularly good.

Yeah whenever you get the chance to trade a future #1 D for middle of the lineup players you gotta go it. Colorado trade is awful for the isles. Trading Beauvillier for a LD is one of the worst things islanders could do.

Sens could maybe do this but I don't know, maybe more if it's not their 2nd round pick but Tampa's instead

And even then? Would they really be doing that? Murray had actually better stats behind what was a much worse defense and he got sent to the AHL. Unless they fix team defense in a major way, it would be a similar story for Varlamov

Since the Sens (terrible) management decided to scapegoat Matt Murray to deflect the blame away from them for building one of the worst "team defense" of the last 25 years, I wouldn't do this. Just sign anybody as a UFA, even Anton Forsberg if necessary

And regarding this comment : "Isles fans blow a gasket whenever Varly doesn't go for a first + "

Well, most hockey fans have no idea about anything goalies and that includes their value on the market.

Just remind them that the Vezina trophy winner just went for a no name prospect last summer. Same contract situation as Varlamov but instead it was 1 year at 7 M$ left

Pretty much every trade is skewed towards the isles.

Ottawa, Colorado and SJ all decline. Nashville might be the only team that accepts but even then whatever the small difference is between Dobson and Fabbro is probably the exact same as the difference between Tolvanen and Bellows. They may just well pass too.

Pass. By everyone, probably.

I dont think the Avs decline. Its a girard trade that would be of interest. But in a vaccum they need other offseason moves in play to make it work. Signing another Dman to take Gs spot and making sure they can extend either Kadri or Nichushkin.

They need to make sure their top 6 and top 4 talent level is still in tact

I like Dobson, but he's not worth Fabbro and Tolvanen. NSH's players are being criminally underrated here. Preds don't consider.

Maybe I’m low on Beauvillier? In a vacuum I don’t think you ever switch a top 4D for a middle 6 winger. I have a hard time thinking Brauvillier ever does more than the 20 goal 40 points he did in 2019. Girard on the other hand is on a pretty decent deal and producing points at a terrific rate for a defenceman.

Unless you’re convinced Beauvillier can slide into the top 6 and destroy his career bests, which I doubt given what he’s shown since coming into the league, giving up a younger better player on a better deal doesn’t make a ton of sense to me.

I am a littler higher on Beauvillier then bc I dont think hes a middle 6er, I think hes 2nd liner. He was on a 50 point pace the previous 2 seasons, covid shorten seasons really messes with his production box score.

This year he having a down year with the islanders, but so is everyone.

Like I said in a vaccum 1 for 1 doesnt make sense unless there is a bigger picture of what the avs cap situation is. Lets say if they lock up kadri, Kuemper, and Nuke. They could flex a girard trade knowing they can try to replace his spot in the offseason. Makar, Toews, and Byram are locks for the top 4. Barron is looking legit in the AHL and they still have Erik Johnson who is playing well in that flex 5th spot on the depth chart.

At the very least its the kind of trade the avs would explore if they reallly wanted to move Girard. Not say its sometihng they should do, but at least its conversation

If im COL, I pass.

Toews/Makar/Girard/Byram are your top 4 D moving forward, you are done, all set for many years to come, dont mess with it.
IMO Barron is maybe 2 years away from being full time NHL ready, top 4 d mins, and he isnt a sure thing either.

Girard & Beauvillier is a starting point in a conversation but in the current situation the Avs pass. In the off season it may be different.
