I like it, however it's important to take time zones into consideration. Let's take the case of Detroit, which is a city in the Eastern Time Zone but who was placed in the Central Division in the Western Conference. For years, Detroit had to play away games in the Pacific, which basically forced their audience to stay up late to watch games: this, obviously, affected their TV viewership and, from that, how much money they could receive from their TV rights. Detroit faught hard for a long time to come to the Eastern Conference: asking them to give that up would be a difficult sell. Anything that affects the owners pockets will be met with stiff resistence.
