Leafs Still Not Built For The Playoffs

Description
I have to say, as good as the Leafs are, they are going to have a tough time playing against teams that have good defensive structure or those who play really fast & physical. I feel the players are doing their best but the roster simply isn’t constructed in a way that allows them to wear down these heavy disciplined teams. TOR’s players rely on their skating ability and hockey sense to outthink opposing players during breakouts and on the cycle, but you won’t achieve anything if you can’t win a puck battle. That for me is biggest reason they haven’t been able to get to their game vs PIT & MIN. What’d y’all think?

Imo kinda a waste getting a talent like Laf just to play him on the 4th line.

My take is the Leafs are built for the playoffs but need some extra pieces. Trading for a partner for Muzzin is a must this year at the TDL and if Mikheyev doesn’t work out on the 3rd line then a defensively responsible with some offensive upside 3rd line LW would definitely make this team a team to be feared.

So they're not built for the playoffs but you did nothing here to build them into a playoff ready team.. Lol

Also Holl is probably a dman more built for playoff hockey then Reilly is.

Not sure the Islanders have the cap space for those two now or in the future, they seem like Lou type players though, Ritchie might not be doing much for the Leafs now but his value will be in the playoffs when the physical play ramps up.

Honestly the Leafs are fine, could maybe add a #4/5 dman preferably a rhd but that's about it.

Don't know how these trades at all change the "playoff structure" of the Leafs. Gee, Leafs had three heavy players last year on the team, Thornton, Foligno and Bogosian, and we see how that went.
Leafs bottom enders are fine....don't how trading for other teams bottom enders make the Leafs better. And to you to trade the Leafs top players? No, not this season.

How many of Minnys goals were complete flukes last night.

How did Toronto look vs the fast, disciplined, big, tough Minny team after that 3-0 goal??

I think you're way off on your assessment, which is how I feel about 95% of the time when you tag me in these.

As others have pointed out, your moves do nothing to help those perceived weaknesses of yours.

Spezza has 2g a 1a vs this big test Minny team. Has a great playoffs last year, and your answer is to bench him.

Leafs are built for playoff hockey. Did you not feel the energy in last nights game? Despite the shootout loss that was honestly the most fun game all season. Minnesota has some great players. I'm rather impressed with the player Greenway has become.

As the guy above said. Some bad bounce goals. And then I've commented enough on your typical hilarious Laf trades. Dumping Holl etc. So the only one I'm gonna dignify on this one.... How in the world is acquiring Strome and playing him over Jason Spezza a good decision for playoff hockey? Seriously. I am beyond curious as to why the Leafs would not want Spezza in their lineup for playoffs. I honestly don't even think the typical leaf hating posters on here could say a bad thing about Spezza as any other team would salivate at acquiring him at that contract. Please. Enlighten us.

That’s fair. I think Engvall is fine on the shutdown line for now, he has had a really good season so far. The goal in acquiring Laf would be to give the Leafs a really heavy forechecking possession style 4th line & he can grow into the top 6 over time.

Holl isn’t good unfortunately. The guy can’t move the puck out of the defensive zone, can’t clear the front of the net & can’t win a board battle. The opposition forecheck from the left side every time cuz they know he’s vulnerable. Rielly is not a physical defenceman but at least he can move the puck better with similar amount of defensive instinct.

Well, I’d argue that Thornton & Foligno were either out of gas or injured come playoff time. If they were still relatively healthy/fresh, it would’ve made a difference for sure.

Thanks for the feedback. Spezza is not a scratch, I just think he may need a night off here & there as the season goes on. He’ll play come playoff time.

You see, the Leafs not taking over until it was 3-0 kinda proves my point. Their wingers don’t have the speed or physicality to consistently negate the trap. The D isn’t big enough to battle against opposing teams’ forwards on the forecheck. That’s why they weren’t able to dominate yesterday.

So we should expect dumb threads like these after every Leaf loss the rest of the season?

Until Leafs are 82-0 and each win is convincing you'll be making threads like these to underpay for your new obsessions Laf and Strome.

They aren't going to win every game, they aren't going to score the first 2 every game. Maybe judge their play based on 5-10 game samples, instead of slow starts in single games.

Yep, Robertson is obviously a decent trade chip, but a late first is pretty well equivalent to a 2nd, so 8ts not close. There is no way (even for an overpay) a team gives up on someone like Laf 1.25 seasons into their career.

He's literally the only person on here suggesting it.

Constantly.

No, I think the Leafs are a good team and they can beat most opponents, even highly skilled offensive teams like CAR, FLA & COL. But it's against these big defensive teams that they have repeatedly had trouble against, like 2019 BOS, CBJ 2020 and now this MIN team.

TOR's fourth line isn't a grinding one. It's one that forechecks and can create offence on the cycle. That's why I think he'd fit here.

That’s mostly because of goaltending, TOR has the third highest save percentage in the league. They are 15th in scoring chances against, defensive play has to improve and it starts with that Muzzin pair.
