hypothetical price trade

Description
Habs are bound to publicly announce a rebuild under Gorton's management. He did this with the rangers. That being said, with price in the back end of his career, what will he want.

Let's say in this AGM he's on board for a trade to a contender.

During Molson's presser, he gives off the vibes as though the most important thing to him is success for this team. To maximize Carey Price's trade value, salary will need to be retained.

On the topic of salary retention; Montreal won't be needing cap space for the next 4 years. Price has done so much for the team that I don't think Molson would stress over paying him 50% of his contract for the next 4 years if we can fetch a solid return for the goalie.

Here are some possible trades that I think could make sense should Price be open to a trade:
Signatures de joueurs autonomes
CRÉÉANSCAP HIT

Transactions

MTL
  1. Murray, Ryan
  2. Newhook, Alex
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (COL)
Détails additionnels:
Habs take back Ryan Murray to clear cap space for the avs. Could be someone else. Just the idea.
COL
  1. Price, Carey (5 250 000 $ retained)
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (MTL)
Détails additionnels:
Price traded at 50% retained. Making him carry a cap hit of 5,250,000 million. Not bad
2.
MTL
  1. Broberg, Philip
  2. Koskinen, Mikko
  3. Choix de 1e ronde en 2022 (EDM)
Détails additionnels:
Oiler fans will say overpay, hear me out. With Price in net, this could be the THE year. And what does this take away from the team next year? Or even the year after. This would allow a wide open window until drai's contract expires, then you re-evaluate.

Yes, Broberg went 8th overall. Yes, he has enormous potential. Has he shown it since being drafted? No. He's most likely not a contributing factor to a cup winning team for the next 2 seasons. Oilers should be in win now mode, 3 cups in 5 years mode.

The first round pick attached to this year is most likely a 24-32 pick.
EDM
  1. Price, Carey (5 250 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
Price cap hit is now 5,250,000 million.

price at 5.25m is still over paying for his play over the past 4 seasons. He has been a below average goalie for some time. 31 other fan bases and the anaytlic community all agree with that, you have to a accept that no one wants a 34 year old rapidly decline goalie on the leagues worth contract

avs could easily pay a goalie in UFA 5m and get the results that price gets. In no way is price able to get a player of newhooks talent and potential

If you want to ignore what he's accomplished the past two playoffs then yeah sure... If he's healthy for the olympics he's going to prove once again why he's still the best big game goalie in hockey. (besides easy maybe lol)

Avs need to win a cup, or a couple. Bringing in Price increases tremendously their chances of achieving that. Does Newhook being an impact player 3 years from now really out weight the possible impact price could make on a borderline dynasty team like the ads?

you dont get to cherry pick a few weeks out of a 4 year span of what his play has been. Hot streaks do not mean hes a good goalie again, He was awful in the finals as well, dont ignore that

Avs do not want Price, he isnt some cup clinching goalie,
Newhook is the Avs 2C in the making, he is already showing his impacts at the NHL level right now. He is not available for a below average goalie trade

I hate saying this, but I don't think you've watched any Carey Price if you think he's a below average goalie. I understand that his regular season numbers have been underwhelming the past few seasons, but he's also been playing with some of the most atrocious d cores in the league infront of him.

I personally am a huge advanced analytics guy and I'm aware of the goals saved above expected. I do believe that that stat is still a little bit flawed as the leaders of the stat always play for some of the best teams. Something doesn't add up with it.

Nevertheless, I just wanted to hear your opinion on a price trade to col. I think you should atleast be open to the idea. A 2c Newhook in 3 years makes less of an impact that a goalie who is capable of standing on his head when it counts. The worst that can happen is Avs don't win a cup with price. No guarantee they win one with Newhook either. wink

Thanks for the chat

Price is great and everything but 34 years old already, which is not that bad for a goalie BUT he has a VERY long injury history. As a goalie myself, I can attest that injuries and age do slow you down. It's one of the most athletic position in sports.

Retaining 50% reignites a bit of value instead of being a (huge) cap dump but certainly not a prospect like Newhook and a 1st...

I know Montreal media have repeated stupid stuff over the years making the public believe that Carey Price has incredible value but as evidenced by Seattle selecting Cale freaking Fleury... he has no value

Hope that helps to understand reality

Hey man, I completely disagree with your comment. Montreal media didn't carry the Habs to the finals, Carey Price did.

Also I understand why Seattle who is a bottom feeder for the next couple years wouldn't want to take on Price at 10.5 million.

Lastly, hopefully one day Ottawa's unparralled success comes true, until then hope you're enjoying reality.

Well, you're probably not from Montreal but I live 15 mins away from the Bell Center. I think it was in 2020 (as I was putting a mask to go in a store), I was listening to an interview with now retired Ron Fournier on the radio and he was saying that maybe the Habs should think about trading Carey Price as they could get a very good young player like CALE MAKAR in return. Maybe he said there would be more pieces but I don,t even want to imagine.

If that's not DELUSIONAL, I don't know what it is. I have listened and watched Montreal medias for over 30 years. Don't worry, I KNOW what I am talking about

Also, very poor reading comprehension here we go... I said "over the years" and you're talking about a playoffs run?

Ok so you also must be 14 years old lol

If you think you poor little pathetic jab does anything but make you look completely desperate... I call Melnyk the worst owner in the NHL and Dorion the worst GM. So yeah I don't disagree

People will gripe here because everyone over 30 with a $5M or higher hit is a cap dump, but you simply don't move Price without a significant return, especially with that much retention. If that means keeping Price, so be it.

The main problem with the Price to Oiler trade, is that Koshiken is playing well, and Price isn't even playing. Oilers don't consider that for that at all.

I LOVE CP31, I've got a cabin very close to where he grew up (not that it's relevant to anything, just makes me like him more).

The unfortunate thing is he hasn't played a game yet this year, and he's had 2 lack luster regular seasons.

If you get 20/21 playoffs Price for the remainder of his contract, then yeah it's probably worth it but that's a HUGE gamble for a contending team.

I think the only way Price is traded for a decent return is if he comes back and finishes the season strong. At this point he's just too much of a question mark.

I agree you don't move Price without a significant return. Trading him now would be selling low, you're better off keeping him and hoping he proves himself worthy of a trade.

If he doesn't you keep the face of your franchise and I'm sure he's a great guy to have in the room.

Add Turris and Chiarot (50% retained) to the trade and I'd strongly consider it. For me, Price isn't worth 2 1sts worth of value and the team likely needs a LD of Chiarot's type in order to actually compete in the playoffs- which is the point of trading for Price.

As for your comment re: Broberg, are his 10 points in his first 13 AHL games at age 20 not something worthy of note for you? He's playing in the NHL while still being rather raw but he's still tracking to become a capable top-4 Dman at a young age.

Just because 1 idiot says something ridiculous on the radio doesn't make every habs fan's opinion invalid. No one in their right mind would think price could fetch makar. The fact that you generalise everyone into that category is what's childish about this. Grow up.

I would throw in Chariot if that's what tips for the boat for you.

As for Broberg, he's got 10 assists in 13 AHL games at 20 years old. It's good, but not great. He's got the potential be great. That's why he still strikes my interest and would be the main peice in a huge deal to EDM.

How the hell did you mess up the quote? I mean it's something pretty easy to manage Help

So you are also not the smartest peanut in the turd eh?

My original statement was "Montreal media have repeated stupid stuff over the years making the public believe that Carey Price has incredible value" so what the hell are you talking about? Is it because I have only named 1 example? I mean, it was pretty clear that my observation was just not based on "1 idiot on the radio". Montreal media is MORE than one person... Is this real life? tears of joy

And that "idiot" was Ron Fournier who is one of the biggest hockey personalities in the Quebec province history, someone that a lot of people listened to. J-C Lajoie who is another big one also made that kind of ridiculous statement, and not just once. Like I said, a lot of medias did

And as evidenced by hundreds of ACGMs here on Cap Friendly, Habs fans DO overrate Price value like crazy, until fans from a lot of other fanbases have been telling them that they would totally refuse their silly proposals

But yeah I need to grow up because I am "generalizing"... Are you going to embarass yourself even more?

The discussion had absolutely NOTHING to do with Ottawa so the fact that you are repeating this makes it even more sad. I thought you were like 14 years old which I found "cute" but now that I see that you are 21 years old, it's kinda pathetic.

Listen up, don't mistake habs fans overvaluing prices trade value with price being a bad goaltender.

The cap hit and length of his contract is terrible. Retaining 50% of it really makes him more desirable. Hes still capable of being a superstar goalie come playoff time, and a goalie a team like Edmonton would love to play infront of. Let's not act like he wasn't the one and only reason the habs made it to the finals last year. Imagine the way he was playing in those playoffs with McDavid and the rest of oilers infront of him! Should be a goalie GM's seriously consider at 50% retained if they're serious about winning a cup.

ok not going to fix your quote again... I actually like Price and yes he has been a great goalie but with his injury history, he might not have 5 years left of great NHL hockey. Not an easy league to play in.

There's a ton of young talented goalies growing into the game, the clock is ticking for guys like Price, Fleury, Rask, Varlamov... Rinne and Lundqvist retired already... a new generation is coming

A team could be tempted to "gamble" on Price with 50% retention but NO TEAM is going to give the Habs a 1st and a prospect of the quality of Alex Newhook... Maybe you didn't know who he was but he's from the same draft as Caufield and will easily be a better player. Something I was also saying when people were overhyping Caufield like crazy

Price can be traded with 50% retention but AVS fans won't want to pay that price, not even close

well im not looking to trade him unless its for a hefty return. ID rather keep his leadership around and have him retire a hab. sad tho because his window to win is officially over in MTL.

It should be about what he wants, but he'll have to show he's ready to help a team once again. He hasn't played in months
