Imagine if the Oilers had signed Yakupov to 8 years x $8 million after his 0.4 ppg RFA year. We would be in 7th year of that 8 year term.

(not picking Blues here, but the traded for him and I had to pick someone)

Explain to me why Hughes has more career points and is already signed to a long term extension and Krappo isn't

Kakko hasn't been extended because our GM is secure in his job and doesn't need a W. Our wins come on the ice.

Dach is better than Kakko, and Hughes is definitely better than Dach. At least, at this point in their careers. Soooooo....

Poor Nail Yakupov, he never stood a chance and is likely to remain considered one of, if not the, biggest 1st OA draft busts in NHL history. To be fair to the Oilers though, Yak was pretty much the consensus 1OA among hockey experts.

When I reminisce, I recall a one-dimensional player who struggled to figure out his role in a 5-man system. He sure could shoot the puck though, and his celebrations were fun to watch. Sometimes, when I am feeling a bit delusional, I wonder what might have been had the Oiler coaching staff forgiven his flaws and allowed him to play his game. Those old highlights can be tantalizing, he looked like a pretty solid trigger man for McDavid. Oh well.

Hughes with 55 points in 121 games. and Dach with 42 points in 104 games. It's probably worth mentioning that Dach put up almost as many points as Kakko last season in 30 fewer games and actually maintains a better 2 way game than both Hughes and Kakko.

This is not true- Kakko was one of the best defensive wingers in the league last season, while Hughes defensive metrics were very very positive as well. Offensively Kakko will start to put up points because he’s playing with Strome and Panarin, as evidenced by his 8 points over the past 9/10 or so games.

Hughes drives play better than both of them from the center position, which is the most important position in the sport. The 8x8 is an overpay, and will be for the first 2-3 years of the deal, but if he becomes the 75-80 point guy everyone thinks he’ll become, it’s worth it for the 4-5 years on the back end. The point totals are funny to me, because he doesn’t really have a lot of talent around him. This year he does, and he’s at a point per game. Only 5 games though. Just a matter of him staying healthy

Dach is a really really good young player but not quite as good as the other two. Also helps to play with wingers like Kane or DeBrincat every shift…definitely eases the transition because they’re incredible
