Best Way to Tank

Description
Hopping on the tank train and let me tell you it might be more fun than a Stanley cup run. Could see the following guys getting traded this year. Some guys have value and some guys don’t have much but asta lavista. The idea is to have the best roster to tank

Send Caufield to AHL. Send Norlinder back to SHL. Reasoning would be because Gorton is purposely keeping Ducharme for the rest of the season because he brings the worse out of every player except maybe Chiarot. Get those two somewhere where they can develop for the season.

I am going to assume price is still a ways away. JE seems to be still minimum a few week.

Final thought on the tank is do whatever it takes to bring Harris in and burn the one year once his season is over
Transactions
1.
MTL
Habs retain half. Somewhere in value of a late first or 2nd. Sure everyone can argue how Edmonton would never do that but only time will tell
    2.
    MTL
Been seeing a lot of Toffoli to the flames on here. Is there a way to make it work with no retention and without bringing back monahan? Don’t hate Sean coming back but would probably make the team better today which hurts the tank
      3.
      MTL
This is more wishful thinking. Could be anywhere but I don’t see any reason MB should have signed him to that deal to play on the fourth line. Any team interested in Armia with his current deal for the next 3.5 years?

Flames need to send Money back preferably not Lucic maybe when Valimaki has confidence again he can take Zadorov's place and he can be the money going back? Doubt that happens because Suttef loves Zadorov type defensemen

Or flip Monahan for some smaller assets

Can’t they all keep getting injured and I’m afraid it’s going to get better as players drop. Would keep opening day roster if we could cause it has been working

Habs roster is too good to be this bad. Trading a couple of players now, like the ones listed, would ensure they get the pick/rebuild they need.

Ok ya that is fair. What does monahan Toffoli deal look like? Some mid round picks going both ways?

No one want Armia....he is terrible value for his contract. Get what you can for UFAs. Toffelli is a trade, but likely Habs are going to have get cap back in deal.

Everybody is complaining cause the Oilers ARE the type of team that would do that.

You are right. Great value on his last contract and terrible value on his new contract.

I think the extra $2M+ AAV on monahan probably makes it hard to be a 1 for 1 but also probably not far off

Armia came up huge in the playoffs. When rules dont matter, he is a big body that is able to take abuse while still playing his game. I don't expect a huge return, but i bet some teams are interested (maybe some retention)

I think the general consensus among Oiler fans is that the 1st round pick is most likely tradable if it brings a good player with some term, and that is why many balk at the idea of giving up that asset for Ben Chiarot. Other Oiler fans suggest Chiarot is simply not worth that price.

It seems to me the return for Chiarot will be determined by the trade market. As I see it, that means Chiarot's value will be determined by the availability and asking price for other players. If Montreal has already set the price at a 1st round pick there really is no room for the price to increase so it serves other GMs well to sit back and wait to see who else comes available before the TDL.

Everything you are saying is true. What I have been reading though is that chiarots market is picking up and he will be going before the trade deadline but after Christmas which could change everything. Insiders seem to think a 1st will happen but realistically Montreal is taking whatever the best return is.

So either Chiarot will kind of set the market for rental defencemen if he goes early in the new year or if he goes closer to deadline the market will already be set.

Also, not sure if Montreal has set the price at a 1st or if that is strictly like Elliot friedman and Pierre Lebrun speculating. With management changes I am sure Gorton hasn’t really got far with any talks

Toffoli for Monahan is just a bad concept. Monahan's struggles on Calgary means he will be worse on Montreal, on top of only being here for 1 year. It doesn't fit a rebuild and it doesn't make the team better now.

Armia is a strong and versatile player that can keep either of your bottom 6 lines afloat and take defensive responsibilities. His value is being good enough that it frees up your top lines without the risk of being overwhelmed by the other team's top lines. If you can afford him, he's a good asset to have, but his contract could limit his market as players like Lehkonen don't require as substantial of a commitment.

Yep, if he's traded before others then he will go at a time when there is demand and very little supply. That would be the best case scenario for Montreal. There are others who may come available as the calendar turns to February and March. Seattle could have a significant impact on the trade market, they loaded up with defense during the expansion draft and one has to assume Ron Francis will use that collateral soon. Mark Giordano, although carrying a much heavier cap hit, would be an extremely attractive option for any playoff bound team, and Carson Soucy represents some very good value. Vegas will need cap space before the end of the season so Brayden McNabb might hit the market and despite his extra year of term he would be a very attractive target as well. Brian Dumoulin is another who might become available, although his extra year of contract includes quite a bit more salary.

It really does surprise me to suggest that, at this point in time, scoring from the bottom six forwards appears to be a priority for Edmonton, rather than shoring up the defense. Derek Ryan started off well, but has faded offensively. Ryan McLeod has looked good at times, but he's still developing. Warren Foegele has been good most nights, but he's never been a scorer at the NHL level. Colton Sceviour has shown flashes, but hasn't been rewarded much for his efforts. Tyler Benson was an offensive dynamo throughout his minor hockey career and in Bakersfield, but his weak skating and his deployment on the 4th line have limited his contributions at the NHL level. Brendan Perlini completely disappeared once the regular season began, and Devin SHore has been injured and is not likely to add much scoring punch when he returns. Maybe Dylan Holloway will add some depth scoring, but it is risky to depend on a raw rookie for that purpose.

Despite the rash of injuries to Edmonton's blue line, I think Edmonton should be looking for a bottom six forward who can drive some offense without giving up too much defensively. Because the bottom six have been crushed at 5v5, that kind of acquisition should be of more importance than adding a defenseman.
