Check out this Athletic article on puck-moving defensemen

Severson is ranked:

Neutral Zone: #7
Slot Passes: #10
Entry Efficiency: #1
Entry Volume: #12
Overall: tied at #18 (tied with Chabot, Theodore, Sergachev and Ekblad)

Why are you so low on him?

That would be preferable to the Canucks as well. Boeser + Myers for this package might just be enough to turn the franchise around.

Whats going on with his dzone? This data lines up with what Ive heard from Devils fans that Severson is a giveaway merchant.

He has had a few rough nights, with some costly mistakes on failed exits. But overall, the good outweighs the bad.

He was pretty steady last year. A few bad games earlier this year on west coast trip.
But he mostly fits NJD system well (based on more possession, little dump and chasing) in that he reliably delivers puck to those that transition through neutral zone.

Why are you so low on him?

He has yet to improve his defensive game in any capacity since he came into the league, dumb penalties, costly giveaways, own goals, inability to be a factor on either special teams unit. I've had enough of him personally but that's just me.

Fair, I'd like Boeser too. Miller is playing way better this year though, you'd be betting on a big turnaround with Brock.

His strength is 5v5 turning the puck around, getting it into hands of Bratt, Mercer, Hughes, etc to transition out.
He is not supposed to be our PP#1 qb, nor our top PK guy. He was only forced into those roles for years since we had no other good options.

Compare Subban. Whose exit plan seems to be always go for the home-run pass.
When that ends up in another icing call, that extra DZ start doesn't count for getting the puck out of our zone (which was our biggest problem last year).
And worse, it ends up in other teams possession in neutral zone.
Watch the game tonight. Pay attention to what happens when Subban starts the exit vs when Severson starts the exit.
Subban's will be exciting (swing for the fences!). Severson's will be boring, forgettable.

The Severson/Smith pairing has been rough this year in generating offense and scoring points.
But that is really not really Severson's fault. His metrics on possession and scoring chances are fine.
It is the 4% on-ice shooting % that is hurting his point totals. That number is an outlier its so low.

Boeser would be easier to acquire then. Better to buy low for Boeser than to buy high for Miller
