Brodin not being on this list is a tough look. would've liked to see them combine this years first 20 games with last years data.

Honestly surprised Josi is number 1 considering he wasn't happy with his play last year -- and Karlsson number 2 is extremely impressive given his perceived fall from grace over the past few years.

Just checked the lists for each stat and he never shows up on any of them. I don't know what Hamilton's numbers are for each category, but he must either be finding ways to move the puck that aren't measured/measurable or he just isn't in the upper echelon of puck-movers. 200+ defensemen are playing in the NHL, I guess he just isn't part of that top 12.5% when it comes to puck-moving. Still a damn good defenseman though.

I don't believe they used rush attempts in the dataset, but the statistics they did use are transition numbers between each zone (volume and efficiency) as well as slot passes in the offensive zone. Also, I don't think rush attempts would be a very good determinant of a puck-moving defenseman, as it only measures shot attempts on the rush. A puck-moving defenseman is usually defined by the ability to transition the puck up the ice and distribute it effectively once it reaches the offensive zone, so I don't see how rush attempts would be very helpful when measuring that ability.

Based on the numbers, it looks like Orlov takes the main responsibility of moving the puck so Carlson can take over once it reaches the O-zone.

Hamilton's exit passing is not his strength as much as his rushing.
But still one piece to the puzzle.

You do know I was talking about the stats used on the Athletic article, right? They didn't use that stat, and he didn't break the top 25 in any of the transitional categories that they did use. Hamilton is elite on the rush, yes, but that's not what was measured here. Again, this list was ripped from an article on The Athletic, I have no connection to the creation of this ranking.

It's interesting, the different ways defensemen achieve the same goal. For instance, nearly 75% of Severson's entries are pass entries (as opposed to carry entries) compared to only about 34% for Josi. They're both among the best in the league in zone entries, yet they go about it in completely different ways.
