Is Strome A Lazy Entitled Player

Description
There has been a lot of debate on this site between Hawks fans and Leaf fans once again, this time about Dylan Strome. I decided to bring the discussion to Reddit to see what their users think of the situation, and the majority of Erie, Yotes and Hawks fans say that he has the tools to be an effective player, but he is very lazy and entitled. For example, he never goes into the boards to win a puck battle, never moves his legs away from the puck. I think if that's the case, it's going to be especially hard for CHI to try and get value for him because these are the worst types of players to deal with. He's not underdeveloped or lacking skill, he's just lazy.

This 1000%. If you insist like playing him as a grinder, he will be ineffective. He’s proven more than once that he’s a effective pivot among skilled players. Too often do people think playing a skill role is some kind of reward for “hard work”, when in reality it’s poor coaching through poor utilization.

or just "not dynamic". Some people just move faster.

Jason Spezza and Logan brown has been "accused" of the same things... They just have tall lanky bodies.

Tyler Ennis (5'9) and Cole Caufield look the exact opposite. Of course, smaller players will never look as lazy as tall lanky guys on TV...

Hard to believe we're still talking about that in (almost) 2022

At this point I'd do the NYR trade. I just feel terrible for Strome. The Hawks have messed up his development and he deserves better. I would not do the PIT trade. Don't really want Matheson's contract. The Hawks have Caleb Jones, McCabe, Beaudin, Kalynuk, Stillman, Phillips that they're splitting LD ice time too right now with additional LD draft picks looking to sign soon. Having 4 more years of Matheson will certainly hurt the long-term goals of the Hawks. Maybe the Hawks trade some of those assets away? maybe, but they still aren't looking for Matheson. They'll be looking for a stay-at-home Dman like Hampus Lindholm.

Yeah for sure Strome can be effective in an offensive role, but I still think he needs to learn to be a bruiser at NHL level. You can only get so far with your skill alone.

Thanks for the feedback. So just to confirm, you don't believe Strome's struggles are due to his weak effort and attitude?

No his struggles have been due to his inconsistent time/usage. He hasnt been allowed to build chemistry with guys on the ice. If you've watched the games hes been in, his struggles stem from the fact that most of the time hes the only guy creating a chance because there is no chemistry. Its been far from "weak effort and attitude"

Thanks for the insight. Yeah it's tough and also strange to see a player this good fall so hard. I still think he needs to become a better forechecker & bruiser if he wants to become a full-time elite player, it would open up more space for him to create plays by himself.

I think MacKinnon and McDavid are actually pretty good on the forecheck. Eichel, Kuznetsov & Kane are perimeter players but they have that elite transition ability to create space for themselves off the rush. That's another limitation for Strome, so if he wants to be elite, obviously utilization needs to improve, but he also needs to be more heavy to play against like Draisaitl.

But Strome worked with one of the best skating development coaches in the NHL for 3 seasons at Arizona, yet he still didn't improve. Couldn't you say that's laziness?

Who said anything about “elite”? I don’t think anybody has argued that. But he can absolutely be a 50/60 point pivot, and has been. All the while being a terrible skater with no physicality.

This mentality about “complete” players is coaches not understanding comparative advantage and instead ruining weapons in the name of tradition. It’s precisely what Evason is doing to Fiala in MIN.

He is not lazy or entitled. Quiet guy who keeps to himself and works hard training. He is a perfectionist and thoroughly loves the game of hockey.

So it's the chicken and egg to most, but there really is a start imo. As someone who has followed this saga through it all...I believe it starts is with management. He's a center. He came to the Hawks and scored 51 points in 58 games...as a center. The reason Stan traded for him was because the Hawks were short center depth. So Schmaltz for Strome looked good. THEN we win the lottery and get Dach. That's no one's fault. In fact a good thing! We can debate until the cows come home about Dach vs Byram. Let's just leave that be for now. NOW the Hawks deepest positions are center and LD. So, they try Strome at wing. He struggled. He never played wing. Then he gets injured at wing and sits. He TECHNICALLY still scored roughly at the 51pt in 58 game pace that bubble year...when he was a center, but management still said no. Even this spring training. Jeremy Coliton and Stan sent him down to the prospects side of scrimmages vs the Pros when he played center. They never once let him attempt to be a #2C. It was Tyler Johnson and Toews. Strome is NOT a 2-way center. That's not a slight. It's just knowing who you are. He's a Power Play offensive dynamic player. It's ironicly exactly what the Hawks lack right now, BUT YET AGAIN. He can't even get ice time. It's actually quite embarrassing.

Looks as though he will start on the wing with Dach and Cat against WSH.

I'd personally like to swap Dach to wing and Strome to center. Neither of them can win a face off, but this is just another fail by the Hawks to me. Don't get me wrong I love the Hawks, but I just think they're wrong.
