Ouf how to respond to that without being condescendant ...
1) Lekhonen is a RFA so you have him for not just a year (value up)
2) Lekhonen is one of the best PK in the league for low budget, what edmonton need to be the best in every aspects
3) Chiarot is clearly a Playoff guy, did you watch last year playoffs at all?
4) Maybe Chiarot is rental, but how often do you see rentals have a high value at TDL? Pretty sure it's the price to pay to have key NHL players for the playoff
5) Bourgault is a potential, but he does not hep the team this year, think in Stanley Cup potentiel for a second instead of future, edmonton future is now
The Oilers already have outstanding special teams, they don't need Lehkonen for their penalty kill. His RFA status means very little given the Oilers are locked in for a few seasons with 6 veteran forwards, have 3 very good RFAs of their own, have a bottom 6 right-handed C for next season, and at least one prospect who will be in the NHL next year. Add the limited cap space available and it should be obvious the Lehkonen is not a fit for the Oilers.
Edmonton doesn't have to, and shouldn't, overpay Montreal because Chiarot is a RD who had a good playoff run last spring and who has an expiring contract. With his team in 5th place overall and leading the Western Conference, Ken Holland should feel that he can take his time and work from a position of strength. There are soon to alternatives to Chiarot available, and they should be just as effective and probably cost less.
I do feel bad for Habs fans, but the reality is that your team is at a disadvantage and you will not like the acquisition cost of a prospect like Borgault, especially if you want a draft pick as well.
