Can this be a thing

Description
Ignore the trade value, as it's more for illustration.

I guess I don't know if the 50% cap for retention applies to the original contract value or the acquired contract if there are multiple retentions. Can someone confirm?

The final destination team can bury Kane if needed and only take a 625k hit for the rest of his deal, which removes a great deal of risk.

I don't think anyone is taking on Kane even at 1.75 Mil. He is just not the type of player that is good for a teams image much like Sean Avery

It's possible you're right. I tend to think there is at least one of the other 31 teams that may believe it's worth a shot at that price though. Pretty minimal risk if the cost is reasonable.

My bet, based on zero evidence, is that he'll end up being bought out and someone will take give him a 1 year deal. The idea of committing to him for 3+ years has way too much potential to bite you in the arse, especially if it means giving up actual assets to get him.

Itinerary the play risk though it is the known locker room issues and the fact that teammates actually said they want to be traded if Kane stays.

would rather trade the 2nd and kaut for someone else then rolling the dice on an experiment of Evander Kane

I mainly just put Colorado since they're my team (low hanging fruit), but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued by rolling the dice on a guy who can really play and gets paid peanuts. He'd have to walk the line though, or they cut bait,, bury him, and just deal with the minor penalty.

It's one of those things where you would have to make damn sure Gabe and the boys were on board though.

Are you allowed to do that? Is the max amount of retained salary 50% per team (like you suggested) or 50% of the player’s total cap hit ($3.5M)?

Definitely agree with this point about contract term as well. Even at a small cap hit, 4 years remaining is a big commitment for a guy that already carries a lot of risk. Kane still has quite a bit of real cash left on his deal, so a buyout wouldn’t be cheap. I have no idea what a buyout would look like if there are multiple teams retaining salary. Maybe someone who knows the CBA better can help out.

The first part is why I made the ACGM. I don't know if they can do this or not.

On the buyout, I'm pretty sure it would be a fourth of what the buyout terms are. SJ would probably rather be rid of his contract sooner than later, so they wouldn't want the buyout. Same with Seattle here. The intent was to benefit them by making it so burying him was the more attractive option.

This is uncharted territory for me. Mainly I just think it's interesting. The risk reward profile for the team of final destination is arguably there though if this is allowed.

This (among plenty of other reasons) is why we’re all posting on CapFriendly and not working in NHL front offices tears of joy

I wouldn’t be surprised if a team took a chance on him, especially if they can do it at under $2M a year. Maybe a team that’s desperate for offense with a strong veteran locker room, like they had in SJ with Thornton/Marleau/Pavelski when Kane got there. Rick Dhaliwal brought up Vancouver in a tweet yesterday. They’re sure desperate, but I feel adding Kane would be fuel to the dumpster fire that’s already burning.

Pretty sure Vancouver is just a hometown connection. I can't imagine a team with locker room issues thinking that adding Kane is a good idea, but stranger things have happened.

I know part of the answer to this!

Essentially, if a team were to retain 50%, and someone else bought him out, they'd be on the hook for 50% of the buyout. For a 3 team, if team X (Sharks) retain 50%, and team Y (Seattle) retains 50% of that, then team Z (Final destination) buys him out, team X would be on the hook for 50%, team Y would be on the hook for 25%, and team Z would be on the hook for 25%.

So,
-Sharks=$1.83 mil cap hit
-Seattle=$0.915
-Final destination where he gets bought out=$0.915

*Note: This is just year 1* The buyout fluctuates throughout the 6 years that the buyout is active.

That same type of thing happened when he first got to San Jose coming with his baggage from Buffalo, eventually he wears out his welcome. The San Jose locker room thought htey could keep him under wraps, over time it broke down

I would like to think Landy EJ and mack would make sure he doent cause crap but its not like the San Jose room doesnt have good leaders either. I would be very cautious
