The thing is the Pens simply don't need Murray. They have Jarry. It doesn't matter if he wont back to back or not, he's better than Murray and gives the Pens a better chance. Murray is just Cam Ward 2.0.

So with LTIR the player's cap space is only available for the time they are out. It doesn't get prorated, so once the player returns the regular cap-hit returns, so to get the full benefit you'd really need a player to be out the entire season depending on what your team's overall cap situation was before. The Kucherov situation last year is the most obvious example. If Kucherov wasn't out the entire season then Tampa wouldn't have been able to have the players on the roster they were able to keep.

When do you think Malkin comes back from injury?

        Buffalo

He helps them in 3 ways

One they get a goalie they can use and second they can use him to get to the cap floor for the foreseeable future. And even if he sucks who cares they are rebuilding and getting multiple top picks for the next 3 drafts is a good thing.

It's hard to imagine anyone taking him away with this contract. Buffalo has former goalie coach Pens Mike Bales, who coached Fleury and Murray. Also, our AGM Karmanos was in the Pens organization and also probably knows very well what Murray is. Murray will of course be Dell's upgrade, but this contract...

I mean it does help buffalo get to the cap floor for the foreseeable future. No more needing to take on dead LTIR money contracts like Boychuck

IF he gets picked up, I'm voting for Buffalo. But their ownership is pretty cheap.

Pierre Dorion is the easiest GM bar none to manipulate in the NHL.

Even if you want to have Murray as a stop gap and/or reclamation project (Sabres? Coyotes?), you don't need to take the full contract (which was an overpayment from day 1)

Just call Dorion and tell him to retain and/or accept another overpaid player

This move shows again how they have absolutely no idea what they are doing. Dorion is the one who gave that contract just 1 year ago. Ok even if you forget that, singling out Matt Murray for the Senators struggles is just ridiculous. If they thought, he would BAIL OUT the team entirely just because they gave him a lot of money, then they're even dumber than I thought

Filip Gustavsson has been standing on his head and is rocking a 0.905 SV%. No goalie is going to have good stats behind the team with the worst "team defense" in the league (AINEC). I don't know much % it is because of coaching, injuries, depth, D-men personnel , inexperience, etc but as a whole, the team bleeds scoring chances from the home plate like crazy. It's not surprising if NHLers are able to score 3-6 goals per game against them.

Unless there is some bad blood with Murray and other teammates/staff, getting rid of him just like that is utterly stupid. It's just saying to the league "hey look I am a NHL GM and I don't know what I am doing!"

It's not that hard to take on a bad Boychuk-style contract. Boychuk's cap is 6 million, but from real money he will only receive a little more than one million. Will have to pay Murray 15 million for the next two seasons. I'm not sure if the owners are willing to spend a lot of money on Sabres right now. It is also not clear what kind of person Murray is and how he will influence the locker room, but Bales and Karmanos, I'm sure know about this and will tell Adams.

        1. Malkin is on LTIR

        2. You need to win another Cup, as long as Crosby, Malkin and Letang are still around.

Malkin isn’t going to be on LTIR forever lol. He will probably be back around January. It would be foolish to take on a 6.25 million cap hit that isn’t moveable when they are going to be already up against the cap when Malkin returns.

December. It still doesn't matter. The Pens have no need for a bad goalie on a bad contract. Find a team that needs a goalie.

It's just a bad choice. Picking them because he has history is poor logic lol. BUF and AZ are definitely good choice and might be the only good choices. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but for the most part, teams don't re-visit/re-acquire players. The rare occasions are teams who had to lose players because of their cost and now have a chance to bring them back, or said players want to finish their careers back where they started. Neither applies here.
