Matheson is making $4.9 for another 4 years, Arizona isn’t touching that with a 10 foot pole, and if they do it’ll cost more than one 2nd

Matheson is a good player. Contract is bad, but he should be making 4 mil imo. Not 4.9, but 4 mil

It’s just not necessary to tie that much cap up in a good/steady player, it’s why Pittsburgh would like to move him in the first place. You can’t have MP and matheson making $9m combined, and Arizona would need to be incentivized more than one 2nd to take on that same issue

Tbh, I dont want to move either of them. But because we have POJ who still needs to play, trading Matheson makes the most sense and ARI makes the most sense. (Pettersson has been really good this year so were not trading him). Maybe Matheson + 2nd + Angelli for 6th. Idk, but either way you're getting a good top 4 dman who is overpayed, but not by much

Honestly I’ve seen him play, I don’t hate the player at all. Arizona is just more into projects like ghost who they can pay if he sucks since they have to pay someone, or hit it big and he goes off for 15 pts in his first 20 games and you’ve now got a valuable asset. Matheson is likely to be a steady #4 D kind of guy, but he’s also not going to really bring back anything beyond what he originally gets you to take him. I see where Pittsburgh would realistically like to move one of their D that’s making in the $4m range, but I’d say you’re more likely to find a fit amongst a mid tier wild card type team than Arizona
