Description
yes savard got a 1st and a 3rd so chiarot should get the same... just cuz 1 team over paid doesnt mean that it is the new standard. I am sure MTL will probably ask for it but getting is something else.
here are some comparable that statistically or playing style are close to chariot and you tell me the outlier.

Still have to play in front and Ben has done so. Over the previous 4 playoffs he has played the 7th most games while averaging over 21 mins. He is a experienced and established top pair deployed dman.

He consistently gives up more goals, shots, scoring chances and high danger corsi than his peers. The only reason he played in the top-4 was that MTL though he was a good partner for Weber. Look at his stats - he was clearly the weak link in the top-4 in Montreal.

His results prove that he's a 3rd pairing defenseman who is over his head in the top-4. He's not worth more than a 3rd or 4th.

Ah the be all end all "relative stats" . Perfect for those who lack the understanding of how coaching, matchups and even relative statistics work.

i mean none of us know how GMs value players but of these dmen, only 2 of them were playing 20+ mins a night for the team that traded them (Smith and Hainsey) and they got the best returns (Savard was not one of them)

exactly one trade doesn't create a new standard. TB made that trade because they pretty much knew they were 1 players from essentially guaranteeing back to back cups. So would I trade a 1st for a essential guarantee cup absolutely.

Most teams are trying to add to give them a chance but not sell the future if it doesn't work. Take in to account COVID and the flat cap those 1st round picks are even more valuable because you have cost control on the player for years. I see more teams leaning towards the lower cost trades. with the true contenders the TB, CAR, FLA VK spending more assets. of those i dont see any going for chairot

Brenden Smith has never finished a season or playoffs averaging 20 mins. Nevermind 23-25 mins that Chiarot does. Also the 2nd round pick wasnt the rangers pick it was Ottawa's 33rd overall+ the rangers 3rd round pick. 33rd overall(which was known to be high at the point of the trade) + a 3rd round pick is equivalent value to a 1st round pick.

    hockey-reference.com/players/s/smithbr05.html

Hainsey was a month away from his 36th birthday and had NEVER played a NHL playoff game. Chiarot is much younger and has playoff pedigree.

I haven't watched much of Montreal this year because they haven't been worth watching. I did see them in the playoffs last year though and wasn't impressed by Chiarot. His results back up what I saw: he allowed more shots, scoring chances and goals than any of the other top-4 guys.
