If they were built for playoff hockey they'd have a second round berth under their belt, but I digress. They've got enough skill to get pretty far, but it would help if that skill was more evenly spread. If either of the first two lines had another player with play-driving ability, it'd definitely help. The bottom 6 has enough grit and competitiveness to boost the team, and that defense should serve pretty well, though it's not quite enough to give their opponents fits. The goaltending should work as long as they put out whoever has the hot hand, but if both of them fizzle out from the workload things could get ugly. While I wouldn't say they're built for playoff hockey, this roster should definitely work in the playoffs. Keyword is should.

I would take the Leafs depth over the Oilers depth any day of the week. Leafs are 3rd in GAA and know how to finally defend 1-0 leads. Oilers need 6 goals to win games

One thing that the Leafs have done well in is defend and win 1-0 games rather than winning 5-4 type of games. After switching to a 1-1-3 formation (Islanders hockey) since the VGK game, the Leafs look like a better defensive team

Kampf has been everything the Leafs needed, a reliable shutdown centre. There is a reason why the Leafs are 3rd in terms of GAA

Built for the playoffs is a myth.

Would Ryan Reaves playing 4LW for 8 min per night all of the sudden make the Leafs playoff tough?

Zach Hyman was the most "built for the playoffs" guy on the Leafs roster, and he had 5 pts in his last 19 playoff games (I still love Hyman, just making a point).

The Leafs just like any other team will live and die with their stars. I'm not worried about Matthews, Tavares, Nylander. I still think Marner can be effective in the playoffs, but he'll have to get over that mental hurdle (hopefully this playoff).

Here are the issues as I see it:

- Bunting is not a first line player, he's suited for a 3rd line role.
- Kerfoot is not a second line player, he, also, is suited for a 3rd line role.
- Ritchie is confused.
- Defence is good, not great.

- Bunting does his job well.
- Kerfoot has been one of the hardest working players on the team.
- Ritchie is confused, I agree lol
- that not great defence has been a top 5 defence in the league this year.

Nope.

Recent improvements noted. They have shown they can be better at playing low event hockey, which is important in the playoffs.

Not a contender by any means though IMO.

So you are saying Bunting is a 1st line player?

Also, just because you work hard doesn't make you good at hockey.

I didn't say either of these players were bad players, I simply stated that in the OPs configuration of the lines, those two individuals are penciled in above their ability.

The OP asked a question, "Are the Leafs built for playoff hockey?". Name me a team in recent memory that has won the Stanley Cup without a Norris caliber defenceman. Hedman, Hedman, Petro, Carlson, Letang, Letang, Keith, Doughty, Keith, Doughty, Chara etc. I stand by my point, the Leafs defence are good, not great.

Used to be for years, but it's finally better! We actually have legit NHL level bottom 6 players this season. Foegele has been great, driving so much offensive zone time, he's got robbed a couple times but I know how happy oilers fans are with him. Kassian has played really solid too. I think they will wait to see if Holloway is ready for the NHL (once he's back from injury) before they make any upgrades to their bottom 6.

They're 13-4 and have the highest winning percentage in the west. Not saying it's sustainable, but clearly they can somewhat defend a lead lol. They've successfully defended leads all year and they're the 7th best ranked team in the NHL when holding a lead...
