Well the Sens traded Jonathan Gruden (AHL) and a second round pick to the Pens for Murray. The Pens used that second-rounder to draft G Joel Blomqvist.

Why in the name of anything that breathes oxygen would the Oilers ever dare to pick Murray up on waivers? It's straight up one of the most ill-conceived, half-assed thought lines I've seen here.

"oH bUt KoSkInEn SuCkS" they claim while the man holds a 10-2 record. Sure his save percentage is down recently, but so are the Oilers 3 starting LHD. Regardless, Skinner is showing exceptionally well at the NHL level through his half dozen games thus far. Is the assumption that he can't be an NHL goaltender because he's still under his ELC? What gives?

Beyond that, what do the Oilers do once Smith returns? What does any team want with that much dead cap when winning a Stanley Cup as soon as humanly possible is the only thing that matters?

If Edmonton wants an upgrade in net - and I truly believe Skinner's emergence nullifies that - then they'll absolutely look to a rental. The Oilers are on the brink of not being able to afford both Puljujarvi and Yamamoto next season. Adding Murray now, later, whenever, would be an unmitigated cap disaster for the Oilers.

It makes a lot more sense for either the Coyotes or Sabres just to reach the cap floor, but I don't know why they'd do it for free. Some sort of compensation would be absolutely necessary.
