Description
Not to jump the gun from one Skinner good game, but if Smith gets healthy by the new year, Smith Koskinen and Skinner makes the goaltending situation pretty good. Should prioritize solidifying the shut down abilities in front of whoever is playing best and starting in next.

Eller maybe

Washington wouldn't sell Eller if they're in a playoff position though, no? He'd definitely be a great 3C fit, but didn't think Washington would be a target. Looks like Larsson has been playing a lot of shutdown minutes in Arizona, low cap hit and probably flying under the radar with how much Arizona sucks, so I went with him here.

If he stays uncharacteristically offensively hot, yes I agree. But deadlines have been unpredictable lately (see Hall not getting a 1st...), so I figure Lavoie and a 2nd is a good starting point for "negotiations".

Carter would be very useful, with Foegele and Kassian that could be quite a line to roll out following the top 6. Depends on the pens falling out of things I guess.

Sure, but he's still putting up pretty good points. Something hard to find consistently in the bottom 6. But I agree, some drawbacks, a player like Larsson would perhaps be more useful in most situations, other than increasing bottom 6 scoring...which would be nice.

A 2nd and a prospect is a decent return. It doesn't have to be a 1st if we're getting a young asset back.

It is an enticing package for sure! but I'm not that sold on Lavoie, even if he is from QC.

I'd go for Holloway 1 for 1 or switch Lavoie for Xavier Bourgeault.

I don't know but I see a lot of McCarron in Lavoie and that scares me.

He won't provide an increase in bottom-6 scoring though. The only reason he's getting some points right now is because he's playing with Guentzel and Rust mainly, and with Letang and Marino backing him up.

If you control for Guentzel you'll see that he's not scoring at all, on-ice for just 1 goal in 80 minutes (0.75 GF/60). Ryan is at 1.25, McLeod at 1.90.

I wouldn't do Holloway 1-for-1 with Caufield. That's a RIDICULOUS ask.

By that same point you could say with Guentzel he is overperforming and underperforming without (see the GF vs xGF). I dont think its all about points with Carter. Its a vet, larger body, RH, Ryan and McLeod are not consistent enough and Carter pushes them down the lineup for the regular season. Id rather have McLeod laying top line minutes in the AHL still than 3C in the NHL given his performance. He probably impacts in the playoffs

McLeod has been performing better than Carter by many objective measures. And Carter doesn't PK... there's literally zero reason to get Carter at this point. He's done. It would just be another "Keith" deal, buying a guy for his reputation alone.

Why do we need a PK guy? Nuge and Ryan are still there.

for an advanced stats guy you sure dont use it for comparison. Carter leading the way. Better Corsi, Better XGF/XGA

Because Guentzel, Rust, et al. He's not able to carry an NHL 3rd line any more.

Ryan and McLeod do not drive a 3C either. I think anyone Oilers get will need Kassian and Foegele to "drive" that line.

Who would you add as 3C?

Edmonton wont trade holloway, bourgault or Lavoie. They would give up the first, do not forget that both yamamoto and Puljujarvi need to be extended this offseason and they might not be able to afford both. Im not convinced yamamoto is a top 6 player and edmonton desperately needs a right shot center (bourgault). Holloway either needs to play to the left of mcdavid or lavoie needs to play to the right of drai.

I mean, Holloway at full tilt would be great. But in no way at all should Edmonton depend on him being 1) fully healthy at a specific point, and 2) ready to give dependable, playoff 3C minutes. He's talented, but not everyone can pull a Caulfield. Hell Caulfield even couldn't repeat at the outset of this season. So I'd hope they add another veteran C.

Holloway with his elite skating, size, strength and defensive ability is going to find the transition to the NHL much easier than Caufield.

We'll know enough about Holloway by the deadline IMO. If they feel he isn't ready they can make a trade then, but right now I don't see any reason to make a big add because that acquisition might be redundant in 3 months.

If Ryan doesn't settle in or McLeod regresses (he's been playing very well recently), I could see making a cheaper deal for a guy like Johan Larsson in Arizona.

It's already been reported by insiders that he will get a first, agreed it is a start.

Hall didn't get proper return because he controlled his fate and said Boston and Boston only
